Highlights From NYC's Hottest Art Exhibition

The Armory Show, heralded as New York City's premier art fair, has become a cultural destination and place for creative discovery. Showcasing the world’s most important 20th- and 21st-century art once a year, 198 galleries come together on Piers 92 & 94 for an expansive presentation that serves as a nexus for the art world and a leading platform to celebrate the visual arts. Taking place this year from March 8-11, perusing the show is the perfect way to spend your weekend. Here, we highlight 10 artists whose work you can’t miss.

1) Kristina Schuldt — Berlin-based Galerie EIGEN + ART will present Kristina Schuldt, a painter who does not shy away from classical Modernist pictorial forms. The artist creates her own imagery from the wavy hair of a Fernand Léger and the powerful, schematized bodies that evoke avant-garde images of the 1920s.

2) Joseph Kosuth — Joseph Kosuth, an American conceptual artist, is known for installations that highlight the role of language and the meaning it has within art. In his latest installment at The Armory Show, his works continue to do just this, with pieces that convey ideas over images and register as pure forces viewers can respond to.

3) JR — On the exterior of Pier 94 and a part of the 2018 Platform sector, the internationally renowned artist and Academy Award nominee, JR, will debut a monumental new work, transforming archival Ellis Island photographs into a large-scale installation. An expansion of his provocative and often politically-charged public interventions, his works paste large-scale black-and-white photographs of individuals across cities’ architecture, re-weaving a human presence into the urban fabric.

4) Berndnaut Smilde — Through Berndnaut Smilde's 'The Fourth Wall' project, the artist stages 'live' images on a theatrical set. Ephemeral clouds will appear automatically and at random times throughout the duration of the fair, dissipating as mysteriously as they were formed.

5) Justin Mortimer — Parafin presents the British painter Justin Mortimer, widely regarded as one of the leading figurative painters working today, and an emblematic figure for a younger generation of artists.

6) Tabita Rezaire — Goodman Gallery is presenting Tabita Rezaire in Focus. The new expansion of the Focus sector, a themed section dedicated to solo or dual artists, examines the ways in which technology has mediated representation of the physical body and imagined its emancipation in contemporary art.

7) Virginia Jaramillo — Virginia Jaramillo’s central conceptual project? To express materially our sensory perceptions of reality. The richly stained, textured surface structured by the geometry of painted lines provides a visual translation of the "mental structural patterns we all superimpose on our world."

8) Dorian Gaudin — Playing upon the mental and physical worlds, Dorian Gaudin is known for combining sculpture, performance and film that culminate together in impactful pieces. In his exhibition at The Armory Show, his set of wall pieces cast sheets of aluminum against concrete shapes, highlighting a mechanical element of otherwise simple forms.

9) Peggy Franck — An artist that creates an expanse of layered work, Peggy Franck combines painting and photography in her installations for a complete visual experience. Pushing the limits of material and medium, her works drive the viewer to step close, and further back again, attempting to grasp all of the visual elements at hand.

10) Lina Iris Viktor — Conceptual artist Lina Iris Viktor combines performance, photography and painting to reclaim a sacred function for art in the contemporary world. Ibrahim, last year's Armory Show winner of the ‘Presents’ Booth Prize, is a must-see for the 2018 edition of the fair.
