Hip Check: Anthony Vaccarello Doesn’t Design With Sexiness In Mind

Pelvage is to Anthony Vaccarello what cleavage is to, say, Roberto Cavalli, or Donatella Versace. The designer has long eschewed décolleté-baring ensembles in favor for showing a little (okay, a lot) of leg. But at his show on Tuesday night, Vaccarello took his fixation to new heights with one piece cut so high that you could see a model’s tan lines from her summer bikini.
Model Edie Campbell kicked things off in a bomber jacket with a matching miniskirt that was two mere millimeters away from a potential indecent exposure. From there, it was a parade of Vaccarello’s signature high slits adorning leather dresses and miniskirts. Some of the skirts even left the models fully exposed on one side — note to self, arrange for more Pilates classes stat! From the waist up, the aforementioned sun-kissed model, Maartje Verhoef, looked completely summer appropriate in a tank top worn under a belted gray asymmetrical dress. The look could have been a contender for a casual summer picnic or even the office if it weren’t for the sexy slash at the hip.

When approached backstage, Vaccarello admitted that he didn’t design with sex in mind. “I’m inspired by my friends,” he told Yahoo Style. “When I design something, I always have them wear it or it’s always a conversation with real women. It’s never, like, fantasmo.” To his credit, there was some practicality involved in Verhoef’s look — the designer confirmed that the tank is actually a bodysuit. (Perhaps of the racy Miley Cyrus variety but still.)
But what about those slits? “It’s more the girls who wear the dress that bring the sexiness,” he continued. “I never think about sexy when I’m making something. The attitude that she can bring to the clothes when she is happy to wear it, she feels good that’s when the sexiness comes out.”
For sure, these glamazons’ hips don’t lie, but could you see anyone other than a model wearing these high-cut pieces? For the real world, it is fantasmo indeed.
