Hollywood’s Fashion Risks Pay Off at InStyle Awards
On the eve of the first annual InStyle Awards, the magazine’s editorial director, Ariel Foxman, told Business of Fashion, “We own the red carpet.” It was a lofty thing to say before the awards took place, yet it proved true in Los Angeles on Monday night when what felt like every A-list name in Hollywood descended upon the Getty Center to honor a heady mix of fashion influencers ranging from Louis Vuitton designer Nicolas Ghesquière to celebrity stylist Kate Young to the much-debated Gwyneth Paltrow.
Less of a show and more of a dinner, the 130-person event boasted a wealth of high-fashion looks often missing from Hollywood’s more traditional awards shows. There were risks, nearly all of them good. Kate Hudson, there to present Paltrow with the Style Icon award, wore an orchid-print Giles Deacon dress. “I like having freedom in my body. I like things that don’t constrict me,” she told Yahoo Style of how she chooses a red carpet look. “If I’m honest, I’m not that thought out. I just like what I like. I’m a bit of a creature of habit.”
Not creatures of habit are Young’s clients, two of whom skyrocketed to fashion fame this year under the stylist’s tutelage. Selena Gomez and Dakota Johnson joined the petite platinum blonde on Monday night, all wearing Louis Vuitton. Another of Young’s clients, Michelle Williams, is the face of the brand, and told Yahoo Style about her organic love for Ghesquière’s designs: “There’s a relationship between the collections, but they’re so different each time, so I feel like with each collection I get to exercise a different aspect of my personality that comes out through the clothes.” Monday night’s personality, for example, is “a little tougher — she’s going to stay out a little later tonight!”
As the guests poured in, all eyes turned to Kim Kardashian, who wore a form-fitting white dress and cape by Valentino (similar to Paltrow’s iconic 2012 Oscars dress by Tom Ford). Luckily, lesser-known designers like Ulyana Sergeenko (Miranda Kerr), Fausto Puglisi (Odeya Rush), and Preen (Diane Kruger) also had a night to shine among some of fashion’s biggest stars.
