Home gym just one of this remodel's dramatic touches

Award-winning remodel combines form, function and unique touches

Some home features create a wow factor that is instantly noticeable. But sometimes, it’s what you don’t see that creates a big impact.

Stone Construction and Design won three 2023 Bridge Awards, including Best Overall, for a partial remodel of a home near downtown Greenville. The new spaces are jaw-droppingly gorgeous, but there is more than meets the eye.

One of the most dramatic additions is a home gym with carefully selected touches to make it user friendly for even the most arduous workout. It won the Bridge Award for Best Innovation of Space.

“Upstairs we created a third level to the house – it was just an attic,” Brad Stone, the company’s founder says. “We built a new stairway to it and turned it into a gym with a sauna and bathroom.”

The homeowners wanted a space for their post-workout recovery, so the sauna – plus a built in mini-refrigerator for cold water – fits that need.

Of course, the space needed to be heated and cooled, which called for some creativity. The solution was to paint the exposed ductwork to blend with the roof supports and then go the extra mile on insulation to maintain climate comfort.

“We took everything we could out, but we used the existing roof framing and wrapped everything with cedar to give it a structural beam look,” Stone says.

Downstairs, a remodeled bathroom features a timeless herringbone-tiled shower, and the light and bright laundry room combines form and function that won the Bridge Award for Highest Degree of Difficulty.

The kitchen was reinvented, starting with a large opening around the kitchen peninsula, created by using a steel beam to support what had been an exterior wall.

Details abound. Stone says interior designer Stacy Quattlebaum of Stacy Quattlebaum Designs and Interiors worked to bring the project to life in ways that met the homeowner’s needs. A prime example is the butler’s pantry, where a coffee station is always at the ready, thanks to a pot filler faucet. Stone said small touches have big lifestyle and aesthetic impact for families.

“We're starting to see a lot of these elements more and more in kitchens – a hot water dispenser at the bar, steam ovens,” he says. “We're doing a lot of different grid style patterns on cabinet doors.”

The kitchen also features a full height backsplash using the countertop material. Outlets are housed near the under-cabinet lighting – out of sight, but not out of mind.

“None of the backsplash has any kind of outlets or switches,” Stone says. “What we've started doing a lot is hiding a lot of the outlets and even switches under the cabinets. It gives it that clean look.”
