Home of the Week: Inside a Sprawling, One-of-a-Kind Compound in North Carolina’s Blue Ridge Mountains
You don’t have to retreat to Montana or Wyoming to find an idyllic, rustic mountain property. North Carolina’s western region is also home to fabulous mountain homes alongside the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The scenic and storied mountain range covers several southern states, but its highest peaks are actually found in North Carolina. The region is brimming with natural beauty, from lush forests and picturesque waterfalls to acres of protected land and rushing rivers. And if you’re in need of a home that gives you access to this bucolic part of the U.S., look no further than Blue Fish Farm, currently listed for $25 million. Located in Brevard, North Carolina, this 161-acre property is the second most expensive listing in the state and is ideal for those looking for a one-of-a-kind legacy property.

The property features a main residence and pool house, along with two guest cottages, for a total of 12,713 square feet of living space with ten bedrooms, ten full bathrooms, and five powder rooms. And, if you need even more room, there’s potential to add more structures to the property for sleeping accommodations or additional amenities.
The main house is a modern mountain retreat that was redesigned in 2019 by North Carolina-based design and build firm PLATT. It has four bedrooms, five bathrooms, and three half-bathrooms. There’s also an outdoor living area measuring more than 2,000 square feet with a patio, flagstone fire pit, pool, and pool house with a movie theater, fitness center, one-bedroom guest suite, and full kitchen. A tennis court nearby rounds out this outdoor area.
The main residence’s interiors pair rustic flair with modern amenities and technology. There are wood-beamed vaulted ceilings, natural log pillars, stained shiplap ceilings, natural slate tile floors, a dry-stacked fireplace with a sculptural chestnut mantle, plus floor-to-ceiling windows that take in the bucolic views. The kitchen is outfitted with state-of-the-art appliances, including a fabulous La Cornue rotisserie, Viking retro oven, Miele espresso machine, and quartz eat-in bar.
The primary bedroom looks like a five-star hotel suite and has a massive walk-in closet, a light-filled bathroom, and a seating area. The home is filled with natural light and has a library/office, cozy reading nooks, and a media room. There’s even a stone-lined seating area perched directly next to the pond and a nearby greenhouse.

One of the guest cottages features three bedrooms and three bathrooms, plus a high-end kitchen and timber-frame porch. The second guest home is actually a treehouse with two bedrooms, one full bathroom, a powder room, and a stone fireplace. The property also has a greenhouse, a working farm, and a mile of frontage on the French Broad River.
“Occupying rare air in the world of real estate and set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Blue Fish Farm is very much one-of-a-kind,” says listing agent Alec Cantley of Premier Sotheby’s International Realty. “The incredible blend of craftsmanship and luxury amenities all sitting on such a special piece of land in the North Carolina mountains easily make this the southeast’s premier legacy estate.”
Privacy is the name of the game at Blue Fish Farm, which puts you in the heart of nature. The property has exceptional Blue Ridge Mountain views at nearly every turn, miles of hiking and walking trails, three spring-fed ponds, rolling hills, and thickets of forest. It feels like the world’s away, but the property is just 30 minutes from the Asheville airport, downtown Asheville, downtown Brevard, and the DuPont State Recreational Forest.
