Honeymooning and home life: What's next for Harry and Meghan?
After a whirlwind 24 hours, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex now look forward to their first few weeks as the latest newlyweds in the royal family.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle spent their first night as a married couple in Windsor Castle. On Sunday, the newlyweds were expected to return to their home in Kensington Palace in London. They are not immediately embarking on a honeymoon and have their first royal engagement as wife and husband scheduled at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.
A honeymoon is expected to happen soon, though. Harry is partial to traveling in Africa, making it possible their destination may be somewhere there, the Telegraph reported. A possible destination is Botswana, a country the pair headed to for a camping trip after only two dates in 2016.
Speculation is also rife that Namibia will be their choice, with the couple most likely looking for an “off-grid” honeymoon after the intensity of the wedding.
Another possibility may be a staycation, following in the footsteps of the queen and Prince Philip in 1947, who remained on British shores at Broadlands House in Hampshire.
Prince Harry and Meghan will live temporarily in Nottingham Cottage, where they have been residing since their engagement in November 2017. It is the smallest of Kensington Palace’s multiple residences, located in a part of the grounds that once housed important members of staff. There are two bedrooms and a private garden.
At a later date, Harry and Meghan are expected to leave Nottingham Cottage for a 21-room Kensington Palace apartment, becoming neighbors to William and Kate. After the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester moved out of it last November and ongoing renovations of the property, speculation is growing that the newlyweds will move there.
As neighbors, the royal brothers could inhabit what was once a single suite of apartments at Kensington Palace, before it was split in two in the 1950s. The apartments are even suspected to share a secret door.
The couple’s first major overseas assignment will come in October with a Commonwealth tour. Harry and Meghan are expected to head to Australia, where Harry will open his Invictus Games, before moving on to New Zealand, as well as the islands of Tonga and Fiji.
