Is There Hope for a ‘Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' Movie?

One cast-member dangles the dreamy possibility.

From the first moment Michael Zegen read the pilot script for The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with Rachel Brosnahan, he could feel there was “something special” in their chemistry. Alas, with the season’s fifth and final season set to premiere on April 14 on Prime Video, that chemistry is soon to be a thing of the past.

“I don’t think any of us are ready to call it quits yet or leave these characters behind," Zegen told Parade on the Bronx set of the show last summer.

“I haven’t really confronted it yet, and I’m sure when eventually I do, it’s going to be very sad.”

For four seasons, viewers have watched Miriam “Midge” Maisel (Brosnahan) fight to become a stand-up comic in the backdrop of the 1950s and early 1960s, a time when the field was even more male-dominated than it is today.

In season 5, we'll see the charming and formidable Midge get closer to achieving the success she has always dreamt of—but with plenty of obstacles still in her way.

Thankfully, her ex-husband, Joel (played by Zegen), is no longer one of those obstacles.

After Joel’s own dreams of becoming a stand-up comic fizzled, he opened and successfully ran a Chinatown nightclub. He also fell in love with and got engaged to Mei (Stephanie Hsu), who discovered she was pregnant while working to become a doctor. Heading into Season 5, Joel is waiting to see what the future holds for him and his family.

“As far as Joel’s concerned, I just want him to be happy,” Zegen told Parade. “I think from day one he’s been sort of searching for this thing. He’s trying to find his place, trying to find his purpose. It clearly wasn’t stand-up comedy and it wasn’t the plastics industry, either. Now he’s found this club and everything seems to be going along swimmingly, and then another wrench gets thrown into the circumstances. He keeps falling back into the same patterns. He keeps finding himself stuck.”

So, what else can fans expect from Maisel's final run?

Zegen kept his comments spoiler-free, but he did say this: “There will be some shocking stuff that we’re doing this season that I never would have predicted. It’s just as good as it ever was, if not better. Every time I get a script it’s just magic.”

No surprise there. The series, from married creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino, has won 20 Emmy Awards and numerous other accolades since debuting on March 17, 2017.

“The kind of attention we’ve gotten has been incredible,” Zegen said. “It’s bittersweet to move on after this glorious ride.”

Then again, he added, “Maybe we won’t have to say goodbye. Maybe there’s going to be Maisel movies somewhere down the line. I don’t know…”

When assured that Maisel fans would love that, he made his own enthusiasm clear.

“I would love that,” he said. “But as of right now, this is it.”

At least we can count on the cast staying in touch. “In this business, you do a project and you make friends and then you never see those friends again,” Zegen said. “I don’t think that’s the case with this show. I think we’re all going to stay in each other’s lives. We’re family.”

Seasons 1-4 of 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' are available to stream on Prime Video.

The first three episodes of Season 5 will premiere on Prime Video on Friday, April 14, with a new episode dropping every week until the final episode on May 26.
