Hot Sauce Recalled Over Possibility of 'Life-Threatening Allergic Reaction'

The FDA has announced a recall for hot sauce products from Vesta Fiery Gourmet Foods, Inc., of Raleigh, North Carolina, due to a lack of labeling regarding wheat ingredients.

The voluntary recall shared on Tuesday, Jan. 9 is due to "undeclared wheat" that has the potential to cause people with wheat allergies to have a "serious or life-threatening allergic reaction" if the hot sauces are consumed.

As for the exact products affected by the recall, they are Benny T’s Vesta Ghost, as well as the Hot, Reaper, Scorpion and Very Hot flavor variations in the 1.5-ounce size. The UPC numbers are 7 94571 99498 0, 7 94571 99497 3, 7 94571 99490 4, 7 94571 99491 1, and 7 94571 99499 7, and the recall includes hot sauces with use-by dates all the way up to, and including, December 2024.

As of writing, no illnesses have been reported as a result of the undeclared wheat ingredient.

Further details state that the recalled hot sauces were only distributed in the U.S. and sold in glass bottles either online, in retail stores or deli cases. If you bought any of the recalled hot sauces, the report advises you to not consume the product or throw it away. A spokesperson for Vesta Fiery Gourmet Foods, Inc. told Newsweek of how the recall will be handled, noting that there will only need to be new packaging for the hot sauces that explicitly list the wheat flour ingredient.

There have been quite a few notable recalls recently, with granola bars, cereal products, and even charcuterie meat recalled due to a risk of Salmonella, while a popular kids fruit purée snack is facing a huge recall due to lead contamination, with over 250 reported potential cases of illness as of late December.
