Walmart's new delivery service helped my diabetic mom in a pinch—here's how

To help allay the ennui of this pandemic, my mother has been staying with me periodically for long stretches of time. We walk, binge campy Netflix shows like Lucifer, do puzzles and cook. On this last visit, she forgot some imperative medical supplies. She was about to turn around and go home when I suggested we try and find her supplies at a local store.
As a septuagenarian with type 2 diabetes, she’s in the high risk category for Covid. I worry about her, so I had been doing most of the shopping myself and limiting our activities to a quarantine nature. The last thing I wanted her to do was go to a local clinic or doctor, if it could be avoided. But before I headed to the store to hunt for the goods, I decided to check Walmart+.
I had recently signed up for Walmart+, the retail giant’s new delivery service, after I discovered that you can get fresh groceries. The signup was easy—a risk-free trial gives you 15 days, but a quick three-question survey will tack on two more weeks. After your 30 days are up, you’ll be charged $12.98 per month or $98 per year depending on what you select.
The annual fee is comparable to Amazon Prime but the benefit here is the availability of yummy produce and perishables that services like Prime don’t offer in my area. The same-day delivery appeals to my penchant for remaining pajama clad as much as possible. You know, for health reasons.
Walmart+ had everything Mom needed and then some, including a great selection of sugar-free treats and low glycemic items.
With all our stuff in the cart, I chose the delivery tab and selected a delivery window. Email and text messages kept me informed up-to-the-minute on the status. And the drop-off was contactless—the packages arrived at my door so stealthily, I didn’t even see the delivery person. You’re able to leave a tip via text link or email too.
With Mom relieved and me feeling like a hero, it was great to get such reliable service so quickly. And as I sit here, watching the first snowfall of the season, I know I’ll definitely be using Walmart+ often in the coming months.
Equate Blood Glucose Test Strips - 50 count
Mom usually buys OneTouch test strips, but these Equate versions were compatible with her OneTouch meter and cost significantly less—just $20 for 50 (compared to $69 for 50).
ReliOn Lancing Device
This lancet device comes with 10 ultra-thin lancets. And for just $6, it’s worth having an extra on hand.
OneTouch Lancets - 100 count
OneTouch is the brand my mother uses for lancets, as prescribed by her doctor. These are ultra thin for a less painful sample.
Glucerna Shakes for Diabetics
When my Mom’s blood sugar dips she gets really hangry, and then she feels sick. Glucerna Hunger Smart shakes are delicious grab-and-go meal or snack replacements to help manage blood sugar and hunger. These are great for on-the-go use, when she doesn’t have time to sit down for a meal.
Nestle Splash Flavored Water
Mom is always complaining there’s nothing to drink. She’s limited by the diabetes—no juices, no sodas. After a while plain water bores her, so we ordered this fruit flavored water, which is a great sugar-free option.
Ezekiel 4:9 English Muffins
We are big fans of Ezekiel’s sprouted breads. Made of sprouted grains, they are completely flourless and low on the glycemic level, so great for Mom. The English muffins are perfect for breakfast or in place of a traditional sandwich bun.
Kozy Shack Simply Well No Sugar Added Gluten-Free Rice Pudding - 4 pack
I looove rice pudding. And Kozy Shack uses all natural ingredients and tastes homemade. Browsing around Walmart+ grocery, I found this no-sugar-added version that me and my Mom can both enjoy.
Breyers No Sugar Added Frozen Dairy Dessert Salted Caramel Swirl
Um, why stop at pudding when you can have ice cream? Salted caramel swirl. Yes, please.
