Human remains have been discovered in the region where actor Julian Sands went missing this past January.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff's office shared the news last night, June 24, reporting that hikers in the Mt. Baldy Wilderness Area had found the remains earlier that day, contacting law enforcement officials around 10 a.m.

The remains were transported to the coroner's office and are pending identification, which the department expects to be completed sometime next week.

The announcement offered no other details, such as the exact location or condition of the deceased. Once identified, officials will update the pre-existing press release with more information.

Sands, 65, went missing while hiking in Southern California shortly after the new year. Though he's been missing for five months, his family hasn't given up hope, and search and rescue operations have continued as weather has permitted.

Just last week, his family shared a statement on Twitter expressing gratitude to the search teams, going on to add, "We continue to hold Julian in our hearts with bright memories of him as a wonderful father, husband, explorer, lover of the natural world and the arts, and as an original and collaborative performer."

Though inclement weather has interfered with search and rescue efforts over time, the case remains active, as the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Office announced earlier this month.

On June 17th, over 80 folks came together in a coordinated search, which included helicopter and drone crews. Unfortunately, despite the warming weather, some of the mountainous terrain in the area in which he disappeared is still covered in at least 10 feet of snow and ice, which has also hindered progress.
