Huntsville’s Office of DEI to host 5K race to shed light on Mental Health

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. (WHNT) — Lace up your running shoes and get ready to run for a cause on Saturday, May 18, in downtown Huntsville.

The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc., in collaboration with the Youth Friendship Foundation, Huntsville’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion, Psi Kappa Kappa, and Fleet Feet will present the Caribbean Qarnival 5K. The event aims to promote Mental Health Awareness Month, observed each May.

Check-in begins at 6 a.m. at 420 Church St. NW, and the 5K race starts at 8 a.m. A 1-mile run starting at 8:15 a.m. offers an inclusive opportunity for community members of all ages and abilities to join in the cause.

New mental health care facility opens in Madison County

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, an estimated 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental illness, highlighting the importance of initiatives like the Caribbean Qarnival 5K in raising awareness and fostering understanding. More than 20 community health representatives will also be at the event, sharing resources about mental health and wellness.

“Our office is proud to support the Caribbean Qarnival 5K for Mental Health Awareness,” said Kenny Anderson, Director of Huntsville’s Office of Diversity, Equity & Inclusion. “This event not only encourages mindfulness but also plays a vital role in breaking the stigma surrounding mental health. By coming together in solidarity, we demonstrate our commitment to supporting one another’s well-being.”
