Idina Menzel Is Learning 'Not to Take Things Too Personally' as She Navigates Son Walker's Teenage Years (Exclusive)
"Know that they feel your love but they also need their space," the 'Frozen' star tells PEOPLE
Idina Menzel is sharing some relatable mom moments as the parent of a teenager.
On this week's episode of PEOPLE in 10, the Frozen star, 53, gave an update on her 14-year-old son Walker and how she's been navigating his teenage years. The star shares Walker with ex Taye Diggs.
"He’s great. He’s a teenager, but he still hugs me once in a while so I’ll take that," she teases.
"What surprises me is just how mercurial it is, one minute they want nothing to do with you, and the next minute they really show you how much they need you," she continues. "You really have to be on your toes and be willing to get out of their way and out of your own way and not take things too personally. Know that they feel your love but they also need their space."

While appearing on an episode of Today with Hoda & Jenna last year, the Broadway star revealed that her son Walker doesn't always want to hear his mom sing.
"You have a 14-year-old son, about to be 14. So what does he think when he sees you sing?" Hoda Kotb asked Menzel.
"He's super proud of me when he actually sees me sing," said the "Let It Go" singer. "But it's at home that he just kinda tells me to be quiet."
"What about in the car?" asked co-host Jenna Bush Hager.
"Oh, in the car, if I sing in front of his friends...Well no, he doesn't just give me the stink eye, he'll be like, 'Mom, zip it.,'" Menzel shared.
"What would you be singing for him in the car?" Kotb asked.
"Anything! Probably hip-hop, like Jay-Z or something. I'm trying to sing along and that's completely embarrassing," Menzel added.
