IHOP slammed for 'tone deaf' Mother's Day sonogram post: 'This tweet needs to be aborted'
While the International House of Pancakes (IHOP) hoped to get a couple of laughs with its Mother’s Day themed tweet on Sunday, the joke didn’t quite “stack up” with people online.
On Sunday, IHOP posted an image of a fake sonogram photoshopped with a stack of pancakes in place of a fetus, accompanied by the caption, “If you have pancakes in your tum tum, does that make you a pancake mum mum? Happy Mother’s Day to ALL the moms out there!”

Sonograms are photos produced from prenatal ultrasounds that show a picture of a baby in a mother’s uterus— not their “tum tum.” The tweet faced immediate backlash, with users pointing out that anatomical error in the post.
“I’m no expert on anatomy but I’m pretty sure pancakes never make a trip there during the digestive process,” tweeted one user.
“I'm not sure you know how female anatomy works, or anatomy in general,” replied one user.
Another user tweeted, “When I eat pancakes they go straight to my uterus.”

Meanwhile, other users online noted that the tweet comes amid a polarizing debate over women’s reproductive rights as states increasingly pass abortion-restricting “heartbeat” bills.
“And @IHOP weighs into the most controversial space in American politics in the last 50 years,” author Molly Jong-Fast tweeted.
“In Georgia they consider it a pancake as soon as the egg is cracked,” joked another user. Another user suggested that the tweet “needs to be aborted.”

While some took the opportunity to make a few light-hearted puns, others were less than amused and called the joke “offensive,” particularly during a volatile period for abortion rights.

“Holy s*** this is the most tone deaf thing ever,” wrote one Twitter user.
Another user also noted the lack of sensitivity in the tweet, writing, “I get what y'all were going for but you really should have checked the news for like two whole seconds before doing this.”
While many online have called for the restaurant to take down the post, the Mother’s Day tweet remains on the company’s Twitter account. IHOP has not responded to Yahoo Lifestyle’s requests for comment on the post or inquiries as to how they will address the controversy.
This isn’t the first time the IHOP has come under fire for its bold social media campaigns. The breakfast food chain previously made an announcement that it would be changing its iconic name to “International House of Burgers,” or IHOB. While the campaign proved successful in driving up the chain restaurant’s burger sales, many were critical of the phony name-change, seeing it to be a deceitful grab for attention.
In light of IHOP’s latest Mother’s Day social media stunt, one person suggested a new name for the breakfast chain restaurant: International House Of Problematic tweets.
