Rep. Ilhan Omar dances to Prince in ‘Purple Rain’ tribute: ‘This is the only time I've related to a U.S. representative'
Tuesday, June 25 marked the 35th anniversary of Prince’s iconic 1984 album, Purple Rain, which doubled as the soundtrack to his film of the same name. And who better to celebrate than a fellow Minneapolitan, Rep. Ilhan Omar?
The Minnesota congresswoman paid homage to the late star by wearing purple, including a plum-hued hijab; in January, the Somali-American became the first member of Congress to wear the religious headscarf.
Happy 35th anniversary to the best album of all time—Purple Rain! pic.twitter.com/2gJM9hTQ6t

Omar upped the ante by recreating a scene from Prince’s music video for “When Doves Cry,” the lead single off Purple Rain. The video clip sees her lip syncing and dancing along while touching up her lipstick in front of a bathroom mirror, a nod to Prince’s own primping moment.
Omar’s tribute earned raves from several supporters.
This is the only time I’ve related to a US Representative.

These new members of Congress definitely are more fun than the ancient white guys who have dominated the place.

But her critics weren’t so impressed.
Instead if ‘trying’ to be cool and relatable, do your job.

Omar, incidentally, is no music video novice. She was also among several celebrities to appear in Maroon 5’s “Girls Like You” video (at the 3:50 mark) last year.
