In my quest for expensive-looking hair—i.e. shiny, bouncy, frizzless strands—I’ve toed, and often crossed, the fine line between glossy and greasy. Oils can have a weighty effect, and shine sprays have often served up stickiness. Hair glosses, however, have proved worthy of their title, and delivered mirror-like shine sans residue. Traditionally sequestered to salons, hair gloss treatments are increasingly available for at-home use. I’ve tried a handful thus far; the High Shine Gloss from one of my favorite salon brands, Moroccanoil, is next on my list.

The Moroccanoil High Shine Gloss is a colorless conditioning treatment that adds mirror-like shine to all hair types and textures, weightlessly, via its “professional-strength” gloss formula, per the brand. Furthermore, it softens rough strands, and smooths errant flyaways for a salon-fresh finish. Per the brand, the glossy effect lasts until the next wash; that said, some shoppers report longer-term shininess.

The formula features fatty acid-rich argan oil, which is to thank for much of the shine and smoothness it imparts. As trichologist Helen Reavey previously told InStyle, “Argan oil’s moisturizing properties can help tame frizz and flyaways, leaving the hair smoother and more manageable,” too. Glycerin is also present in the product, where it attracts moisture and hydrates thirsty strands, further thwarting dullness and amping up shine.

Whereas hair glosses I’ve tried have smelled like chemicals and been watery in consistency, making the application process tricky and unappealing from a sensorial standpoint, Moroccanoil’s gloss is rich and creamy. Similar in texture to a hair mask, its thickness allows for easy application, and its scent—the brand’s original fragrance, with notes of warm amber—is truly divine.

Shoppers are impressed by Moroccanoil’s gloss. According to one reviewer, it enlivens their "dull gray hair” and gives it “so much shine.” Another reviewer, whose “sad and crispy,” bleach-damaged strands had been devoid of glossiness, said the product delivered significant shine and made their mane “manageable” and healthier-looking. Another fan, who commented on the formula’s “amazing” scent, said it left their hair looking and feeling “like silk.” Finally, another shopper said they look as if they’ve come “straight out of the salon” when they use the product.

For glossy—not greasy—shine, shop the Moroccanoil High Shine Gloss for $30 at Amazon; I certainly am. Peruse more gloss-giving hair treatments, below:
