I'm a reviews editor – these are the best mattress deals this Labor Day
Labor Day is here, and with it, thousands of mattress deals. But in my time as a consumer journalist, I've found that no industry is as littered with marketing jargon and bogus deals than mattresses. Worst of all, mattresses can cost you hundreds – if not thousands – of dollars, so a misstep can be very expensive.
As an editor, I oversee all of our mattress content. I've edited dozens of reviews, buying guides, and articles on the best mattresses and deals, so I know exactly what our testers recommend and what you should stay away from. Every mattress in this guide has been tried and tested by our team of expert product reviewers.
I've also personally gone through hundreds of mattress deals so that I know exactly what's on offer. I've covered a lot of mattress sales days so I know which deals are actually good value. There's no bed in here that I wouldn't buy myself.

It's not just mattresses on sale. There are huge discounts at some of the biggest retailers in the country.

Walmart: More than $1000 off patio furniture.
Best Buy: All your small appliances

Bloomingdale's: Luxury goods for hundreds of dollars less.

Cheap but quality
Siena Mattress, Queen | was $699, now $399 at Siena
My advice: don't spend any less than this. Any cheaper than the Siena and you're buying a low-quality mattress. We liked this on test, and we think it's the best you can get under $500.

Best organic
Plushbeds Botanical Bliss Mattress, Queen | was $3249, now $1999, plus $599 worth of free gifts at PlushBeds
This is the only organic mattress deal I'm recommending. $2000 is still expensive but this bed is not only naturally hypoallergenic, but also completely customizable. You can adjust the height and even have two different firmnesses on either side of the bed if your partner has a different preference. You also receive $600 worth of bedding thrown in.

Best memory foam mattress deals
Memory foam beds are increasingly popular. The drawbacks are that they can sleep hot and you have to put up with an off-gassing smell for a couple days before you can use them. The upsides, however, are that they're great for back and joint pain. They're the cheapest type of mattress you can buy, and especially inexpensive around sales events like Labor Day.
Nectar Original foam mattress
Was $1049, now $699 at Nectar
Our pick for the best memory foam mattress around, and best mattress for back pain, the Nectar memory foam mattress is now 33% off. It's anecdotal, so take it with a pinch of salt, but this mattress really helped our tester's fibromyalgia.

Leesa Original
Was $1299, now $1002 at Amazon
The Leesa Original all-foam mattress is our best mattress for side sleepers. We think it's the ideal combination of cooling, contouring, and pressure-relieving support. It's on sale at Leesa too, but I've found it for $97 cheaper than their sale price at Amazon. However, a word of warning: this bed is incredibly soft. If you love a firm bed, you'll find this uncomfortable.

Hybrid mattress deals
Hybrid mattresses combine the softness of memory foam with the supportiveness and cooling of springs. The biggest downside with these beds is always the price, so it's worth having any discount you can find.

If you're a hot sleeper, you've just met the perfect mattress. Recent heatwaves have shown it really pays off to have a cooling mattress, and in our estimation this is the best you can get. On test, it felt cold to the touch. It's still expensive, but a nearly $850 saving is always worth having.

Labor Day sales FAQs
When is Labor Day?
This year Labor Day falls on September 4, with sales dropping throughout the day.
Should I buy a mattress on Labor Day or wait until Black Friday?
It depends on the condition of your mattress. If your mattress is at all uncomfortable, I'd buy a new one in these sales. A bad mattress can aggravate or even cause back pain. Even if you aren't in pain, disrupted sleep from a lumpy or squeaky bed will have knock-on effects in the rest of your life.
However, if you're just looking to upgrade your bedding, I'd wait until Black Friday. There will be a much bigger range of deals and bigger discounts.
Final thoughts
Mattresses aren't the only thing on sale. In fact, Labor Day is best for buying outdoor furniture. I've already seen thousands of dollars off at Walmart and Wayfair.
