An Indianapolis-based coffee shop is taking over the former Starbucks on Monument Circle
Indianapolis-based coffee shop Command Coffee will open a second location in the former home of Starbucks on Monument Circle, Command founder Danny Heller confirmed via email.
Command opened its flagship store at 2910 N College Ave in another former Starbucks in early 2020, serving a variety of coffee, tea and other select drinks alongside a small short-order food menu. Heller declined to provide specific information about Command's downtown location, including when it will open.

Starbucks on Monument Circle closed in 2022
Starbucks most recently operated out of the Circle Tower location at 55 Monument Circle until it closed in October 2022, citing safety concerns. The downtown Indianapolis location was one of several stores Starbucks shuttered nationally due to what management called safety issues in 2022.
Starbucks was not the only organization operating downtown to report difficulties with safety in 2022. Vendors at nearby City Market complained the surrounding area was a hotspot for drugs and crime as City Market amassed over $40,000 in rent arrears.

While reported crime near Monument Circle has declined over the last five years, some residents and businesses still cite concerns about crime and homelessness in the area. The circle recently lost another business when Green District closed in May.
