Cellular damage, poor gut health, sleep deprivation and lack of exercise are believed by scientists to be among the key risk factors for #Inflammaging, which has reached one million hashtag views on TikTok and is gaining traction as medical professionals increasingly take to the app to educate viewers on how to combat the phenomenon through mindful skin care and dietary practices.
“We’re all going to age, but the goal is to age well,” said New York-based nurse practitioner Dr. Efrat Lamandre, who is one such professional. “In general, our skin is going to decline — our collagen goes away, our mitochondria is getting tired, we’re losing muscle — this natural progression of skin changes is going to happen no matter what, but once you add inflammation to it, you speed things up.”
The concept of navigating and preventing inflammaging aligns with the increasingly popular inside-out approach consumers are taking when it comes to beauty. The post-pandemic boom in supplement sales, gut health awareness and fitness studios like New York Pilates and Solidcore bear testament to this phenomenon, which is likely to continue into 2024.
