Inside Jeremy Scott’s Mind-Bending Love Letter to L.A.

This year, Jeremy Scott decided to forgo the traditional location for his Moschino Spring Menswear and Resort Womenswear shows. Instead of London or Milan, he brought them to Los Angeles, a city he loves and proudly calls home.

The Moschino show kicked off a two-day event initiated by IMG’s Made Los Angeles. It took place at L.A. Live, in downtown Los Angeles, on Friday evening. Not surprisingly, for a designer known for his fervent celeb fanbase, the show was a star-studded affair. Big Sean, Bella Thorne, Vanessa Hudgens, SoKo, Caitlyn Jenner, Katy Perry, Amber Rose, Serayah McNeill, and Christina Milian were just some of the celebrities showing Jeremy Scott love from the front row.

This show was special for many reasons. It was Moschino’s first runway show in Los Angeles. It also marked Anwar Hadid (Gigi and Bella Hadid’s younger brother) and Preston Gerber’s (Cindy Crawford’s son and brother to Kaia Gerber) runway modeling debuts. Lastly, the show featured a surprise walk by model Devon Aoki, whose first-ever runway appearance was for Jeremy Scott 20 years ago, when she was just 13 years old.

The show completely embraced L.A.’s breezy culture. Outside the tent where the show took place, guests sipped cocktails in lounge chairs and beanbags under the gleaming sun and perused pop-up vendor booths as part of the partnership with Made L.A.

Slowly, guests trickled into the venue — many clad head to toe in Moschino attire: logo T-shirts, glam sequin suits, dresses, and Windex-printed dresses — all paying homage to the cheeky motifs Scott has made Moschino’s signature during his reign as creative director.

Inside the tent was a psychedelic wonderland of vibrantly colored, inflated flowers and other ’60s motifs.

The collection was a dizzying mash-up of psychedelic flower power, brightly hued floral appliqués, and crocheted and embellished leather, recalling the summer of love and surf culture.

With music curated by Michel Gaubert pumping and megastar models like Miranda Kerr, Alessandra Ambrosio, and Anna Cleveland (legendary model Pat Cleveland’s daughter) strutting the runway, the show was full of Scott’s signature vivacity, color, and nostalgia.

Jeremy Scott spoke with Yahoo Style on the night of his show about why he chose to show in L.A., which upcoming models we should keep an eye on, and advice he would give to the next group of student designers about to embark on their fashion dreams.

Yahoo Style: Congratulations on your first Moschino show in L.A.! What made you decide to bring your collections here?

Jeremy Scott: Well, L.A. is my home and I love it! This is my love letter to Los Angeles. I wanted to pick up on all of the different textures of L.A. — the ’60s surf vibe, florals, a bit of Hawaiian vibes. I’m interested in incorporating the different cultures and textures that are over here in L.A.

You’ve been credited with helping launch the careers of both Gigi and Bella Hadid — now they’re the industry’s biggest it-girls.

Yes! And I just launched Anwar, the third Hadid! I’ve launched all the Hadids! [Laughing]

That’s right! So, do you have your eyes set on any new, fresh-faced models on the rise?

Well, I also launched Presley Gerber and another girl, Cami Morrone, who you’re going to see a lot of! There are three debuts tonight, all exclusive [to Moschino].

And as a graduate from Pratt Institute, do you have any advice for this year’s new spate of burgeoning fashion-designers-to-be?

Honestly, it’s always, follow your heart. That’s the best thing you can do. Just follow your heart. You’ll always succeed when you follow your heart.

In a past interview, you’ve described yourself as being “calm by nature, and a simple farm boy from Kansas.”

I am!

How do you think this demeanor translates into your design work — as your collections tend to be very vibrant and colorful? How does it all come together?

Honestly, I guess it’s because I speak really authentically and that’s where it all comes from!

Great, thank you so much. It was a pleasure to meet you, and congratulations again.

Thank you!
