Inside Makepeace Island, Richard Branson's Private Resort in Australia
This paradise could be yours for a cool $15,000 per night.
As you likely already know, Richard Branson is the owner of two ultra-exclusive private resorts in the British Virgin Islands: Necker Island and Moskito Island. But just like his well-diversified Virgin empire, Branson has cast a wide net in the world of private islands.
We're talking, of course, about Makepeace Island, a picturesque paradise located on the Sunshine Coast of Australia.
As described on the island’s website, the resort was named after former resident and “colorful local character,” Hannah “Shotgun” Makepeace. In 2009, Branson and his Makepeace co-owner, Virgin Australia co-founder Brett Godfrey, transformed the island into a family retreat space. Then, in July 2011, the pair opened the island’s doors for exclusive rentals. Since then, Cathie Reid and Stuart Giles, co-founders of the Icon Cancer Care Group and the Epic Good Foundation, as well as James McBeath and Rikki Bannan, Sydney-based investors, have joined the Makepeace ownership family.
Truly, the team has been able to create a space that embodies tranquility. On the island, each area is designed to emulate airy tropical aesthetics. Rooms include natural linens, plush furnishings, access to a pool area that overlooks the ocean, and views for days.
And really, it’s little surprise the views are the main attraction, as Makepeace is all about maintaining the natural beauty of the island.
“At Makepeace Island, we act as custodians of this pristine environment and seek to minimize our footprint on the environment,” the team explained on the site, touting amenities that include organic produce, a "vegan-friendly" atmosphere, and a wastewater purification system. “Our farm-to-table concept is at the heart of everything we do. Our produce and amenities are sourced regionally to support the local community and we work with partners who practice the same degree of commitment to long-term sustainability goals.”
Of course, the island comes with plenty of billionaire-worthy perks too, like an entire island staff to cater to your every whim, a helicopter landing area, tennis courts, and more.
In total, the island can house up to 22 guests, the Sunshine Coast Daily reported. Though those guests, called “castaways” on the island, will also have to come with some rather fat wallets: The lowest price currently listed for rentals in 2023/2024 is just under $15,000 per night. (Also important to note: That rate only includes eight guests, and the price increases from there if you want to fill the place to capacity.) However, the price also includes all food and activities, twice-daily housekeeping, and all the boat transfers you need to get on and off the island during your stay. So really, living like Branson and his friends is pretty much a steal — no previous entrepreneurship experience or A-list status necessary.
