The Internet Is Absolutely Losing It Over Janelle Monáe’s Oscars Opening Performance
In case you haven’t noticed, it’s the future and the Oscars apparently does not have a host anymore. This is much less of a disaster than it initially seemed like it would be when it was first announced last year, but that’s probably because Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph saved the show by being hilarious goddesses. This year’s show kept up that same energy and kicked off with Janelle Monáe giving us the flawless performance we all truly needed.
Everyone was super thrilled to have Janelle open the show with some incredibly wholesome Mr. Rogers–inspired content. Kinda hoping this performance gets a spin-off in the form of a Netflix series, TBH.
Janelle honestly just kept one-upping herself throughout the opening and followed her Mr. Rogers song with a performance that featured Billy Porter and gave a shout-out to some of the year’s best movies that were snubbed. Obviously, this put everyone right in their feels.
Oh, and she called out the Academy Awards for being so white.
To sum up the entire performance, please enjoy Saoirse Ronan’s face while it went down:
Of course, Janelle left people hungry for more. Again, I don’t understand why we can’t have a host! The people want a host!
Steve Martin and Chris Rock, who took the stage immediately after Janelle, literally just OFFERED to do it! Is it really THAT hard to pick a funny person, throw ’em a mic, and send them on their way? (I say as I watch from my couch with one hand in a bag of Doritos.) What is the point of putting us through all this?! The world is a complete dumpster fire, and a little structure would probably do us all some good.
