Internet reacts to controversial Sexiest Man Alive: Blake Shelton is the 'epitome of a basic looking dude'
On Tuesday night, People magazine announced Blake Shelton as their Sexiest Man Alive for 2017, and some are not convinced. Including Shelton himself. “I’ve been ugly my whole life,” the singer and coach on The Voice said in a statement. “If I can be sexy for a year, I’m taking it!”
His fans were totally on board with the magazine’s decision:
Why and how is anyone denying that Blake Shelton in the sexiest man alive #yougobaby #BlakeShelton ??????
— deanna (@NicoloDeanna) November 15, 2017
So @blakeshelton being named Sexiest man alive is actually one of the only things the media got right in 2017. #BlakeShelton is so sexy to me.
— Kristin (@ummmno21) November 15, 2017
But the rest of the world? Not so much. And their responses have been hilarious.
Some people just don’t see it. “#BlakeShelton, huh? As a lifelong, practicing homosexual I respectfully disagree. The guy’s not even remotely attractive,” one Twitter user offered. “Sexiest man alive: last man on earth edition. #BlakeShelton,” another mused. “No offense to #BlakeShelton, but he is not the sexiest man alive. He is not even the sexiest man on #TheVoice. ( He comes in 3rd ),” wrote a critic.

Any moment now #SteveHarvey will announce he made a mistake and the real winner of @people’s #SexiestManAlive is… (not #BlakeShelton)

Others are putting a light political spin on it.
Its OFFICIAL, People Magazine is scared of Donald Trump and selected a "country guy" (like all Trump Supporters) to be the sexiest man in #BlakeShelton
— Mark Bland (@markbland) November 15, 2017
Really, @people?? Another White Dude Bro…?? Now more than ever, we need someone who's NOT that… #BlakeShelton https://t.co/4mXSxnihEa

Apparently @people didn’t get the memo that America 2017 is no longer accepting applications from straight cis white dudes. No thanks #BlakeShelton. We want the #popularvote #idriselba pic.twitter.com/6EoGUeE04l

Many think there are men more deserving of the title, and are sharing their suggestions. The most requested replacements are Jason Momoa, Zac Efron, and Idris Elba.
Are we living in the upside down world from #StrangerThings? #BlakeShelton is People's #SexiestManAlive in a world where #JasonMomoa also exists? How do I get back to the real world? Is Hillary the President there too?
— Erin Allen (@erinallen_art) November 15, 2017
#BlakeShelton voted sexiest man alive, I think he is cute and all but since I didn't vote. I beg to differ. I can think of many other gentlemen for the Title of Sexiest Man Alive, I have a better one for you @RealTonyDenison now this Man is sexy.???

Isn’t it funny that half of the tweets about #BlakeShelton being the sexiest men alive 2017 mention somewhere #JasonMomoa? XD the people have spoken! (People people, not the magazine)
— Maria C (@Godless_Queen) November 15, 2017
I'm sure he said no, but I just want to make sure they asked Riz first.

Some men are rejoicing in what this means for them:
If #BlakeShelton can be the sexiest man alive that’s real good news for the rest of us if we so desire that useless accolade.
— Asshole Burrito (@zachbayle) November 15, 2017
Then there are those who think there’s something bigger going, or that it’s a mistake:
And the best #sponsored content of 2017 goes to #BlakeShelton and the team at #TheVoice who have to have bought this #SexiestManAlive cover for it to be true #Ad #Spon #Wheredoesthemadnessend https://t.co/HXTYSiz4sh

Any moment now #SteveHarvey will announce he made a mistake and the real winner of @people’s #SexiestManAlive is… (not #BlakeShelton)

Even some public figures are responding. Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee lamented, “Nursing a DEEP hurt today. Was passed over by @people magazine again for sexiest man alive honor that went to @blakeshelton. I sent in photos and everything. Oh well there’s next year.” Olivia Caridi wrote, “Not my Sexiest Man Alive #BlakeShelton #Resist.”
A few reactions have gone viral, including one from a basketball player who seems to be calling Shelton his friend:
I? heard my dude Blake Shelton won People Magazine’s “Sexiest man Alive.” Way to hold I-t- down for all the 7s out there. We appreciate you ??

This isn’t the first time People‘s selection of the Sexiest Man Alive has sparked debate. In fact, when Shelton’s on-screen nemesis Adam Levine won the title in 2013, many people were not buying it. “So sorry. Nothing sexy about a man-o-rexic, serial model-dater,” someone posted on Facebook, according to a Daily News article from the time. “Oh, did I mention his nasal, whiny voice? He is the #Antisexy,” said someone else. “Got it wrong, wrong, wrong,” another responded. Jezebel wrote an entire article arguing against the decision.
The year before, Ryan Gosling fans were upset that Bradley Cooper was chosen. Cooper addressed his election being “picketed” in a video for Good Morning America, admitting “it was brutal.”
What do you think? Is Blake Shelton truly 2017’s Sexiest Man Alive?
