Iskra Lawrence shares photos of her breastfeeding her son as she reflects on 13 months of nursing

Iskra Lawrence is opening up about her 13-month-long breastfeeding journey and the challenges that came with it.

Having recently weaned her infant son, now nearly 16 months old, the British model reflected on the highs and lows of nursing in an Instagram post coinciding with National Breastfeeding Month. The first-time mom also shared several shots of herself breastfeeding her son, whose father is singer-songwriter Philip Payne, as he grew.

"They say 1 whole year of breastfeeding is equivalent to a full-time job the with the amount of hours," Lawrence wrote. "Well it was a job I didn’t want to end. As challenging as it was at times, especially establishing a consistent milk supply, I cherished every second of it."

The body-positive model, 30, went on to admit that she gave herself "unrealistic expectations" of what her nursing experience might look like, as her own mom nursed her until age 4. When her milk supply dropped and she needed to supplement with formula, she "felt like a failure" — a common motherhood stigma she now recognizes.

"I went in with rather an unrealistic expectation as my incredible momma breastfeed me for 4 years with ease and so when I lost my supply a few weeks in I was confused and felt like a failure," she wrote. "I’m beyond thankful for formula and not letting the pressure of 'breast is best' make me feel like a terrible mom, because I needed to supplement and that worked so well for us."

While Lawrence felt pangs about no longer breastfeeding after more than a year — "I still started Googling 'can you restart your breast milk supply' [and] 'what’s the over-the-counter [medicine] you can take to boost your supply'" — she assured fans that every journey is a special one and that moms shouldn't feel inferior if theirs doesn't go smoothly or meet the expectations set out by society.

"Sometimes [breastfeeding] isn’t even about your baby," she noted. "It’s about you and the bond you fear to lose, or for many are told you’ll never have. That’s such an awful pressure or expectation to place upon mothers. Your bond with your baby will be perfect no matter how you feed them. You are doing amazing no matter what that looks like for you...

"I feel like the more parents I meet it makes me realize all journeys are you unique and you should never ever compare yours to someone else’s!"

Her post fetched praise and support from fellow moms and figures in the modeling industry, including Hunter McGrady and Model Alliance's Sara Ziff, who wrote, "Well said. It’s not easy, and fed is best — everyone’s experience is different."

"I love this!" influencer and fashion entrepreneur Manal Chinutay responded. "My breastfeeding journey was a bit of a nightmare but this made me so happy and is a reminder why I’d do it again 100x."

Lawrence isn't the only celebrity mom addressing breastfeeding. Halsey, Coco Austin and Hilaria Baldwin are among those who have gotten candid about their nursing experience in recent weeks.
