Ivanka Trump Color-Coordinates With Children in Palm Beach
One thing no one can argue about Ivanka Trump, now the “assistant to the president”: She knows how much image counts. Naturally, every single thing she wears is subject to intense analysis, as viewers attempt to figure out what she’s thinking and what she’ll tell her father. Is it far-fetched to think her choice of outfits for her children might also be saying something?
This question comes up after she and her three children accompanied her father, Donald Trump, and first lady Melania Trump to Mar-a-Lago, where the president welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping. Arabella, 5, Joseph, 3, and 1-year-old Theodore Kushner walked down the steps of Air Force One with their mother, and all four of them appeared to be color-coordinated. They weren’t wearing exactly the same colors, but shades that complemented each other. Arabella was in pastel purple with a white sweater. Joseph wore navy pants and a white shirt. Theodore was in navy pants and a navy-and-white striped shirt. Ivanka wore a light blue skirt and a beige-and-white turtleneck shirt. Any J.Crew catalog art director would be proud of such a palette.

Ivanka has actually done the matchy-matchy thing with her children before. Arabella and Theodore wore the same shade of red for their grandfather’s inauguration, contrasting nicely with their mother’s white dress. And here’s the trio in pink for a photo op at Mar-a-Lago last month.

Obviously, this isn’t the most important question about what’s happening in the Trump resort at the moment. But the first daughter’s super-styled children remind us of two other famous mothers: Jackie Kennedy and Kate Middleton. As first lady and long afterward, Kennedy accessorized her iconic outfits with Caroline and John-John, who often wore the same color as their mother to photo ops. More recently, Prince George and Princess Charlotte have turned the children’s fashion industry upside down each time they step outside.
Is Ivanka setting herself up as a sort of heir to Jackie? Is she stepping on the toes of her stepmother, Melania, who channeled Kennedy in Ralph Lauren on Inauguration Day? Perhaps it will take a few more appearances for anyone to tell.
