The Biggest Oscar Snubs of 2022 (Sorry, Lady Gaga)
The 2022 Oscar nominations are finally here, and while we’re thrilled for the deserving nominees, we couldn’t help but notice there were quite a few celebs and movies that were left off the list.
From Lady Gaga to Ruth Negga, keep reading for all the biggest Oscar snubs of 2022.
1. Lady Gaga
Lady Gaga was snubbed from the Best Actress category, even though many believed she would receive a nomination for playing Patrizia Reggiani in House of Gucci. Speaking of…
2. 'House of Gucci'
The film wasn’t nominated for Best Picture, which came as a big surprise to fans. Although it received a nod for Makeup and Hairstyling, the entire cast—including Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Adam Driver and Al Pacino—was overlooked in the Best Actor/Actress categories for both leading and supporting roles.
3. Peter Dinklage
Critics thought an Oscar nomination for Peter Dinklage was a given, based on his portrayal of Cyrano de Bergerac in Cyrano. However, the Game of Thrones alum wasn’t included in the Best Actor category.
4. Ruth Negga
Ruth Negga won over fans as Clare Kendry in Passing, which explores the idea of light-skinned Black Americans passing as white. Although the Best Supporting Actress category is stacked, Negga totally deserved to be among this group.
5. 'Spider-Man: No Way Home'
Spider-Man: No Way Home received one nomination for Best Visual Effects, but it was excluded from the rest of the categories. Many expected it to be honored for Best Picture mainly because the Academy has previously nominated other fan-favorite comic book movies, including Joker and Black Panther.
6. Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer Hudson played Aretha Franklin in the critically acclaimed biopic Respect, and while many expected her to land an Oscar nomination, that wasn’t the case. If you recall, the actress made history as the youngest Black woman to win an Oscar with Dreamgirls.
7. Denis Villeneuve
Denis Villeneuve is the mastermind behind Dune, which stars Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet. Although Dune is one of the most nominated movies (it has 10 noms, while The Power of the Dog has 12), the filmmaker was excluded from the Best Director category.
8. 'Sing 2'
Parents know this soundtrack all too well. While many thought Sing 2 deserved an Oscar nom, it wasn’t honored for Best Animated Feature. Instead, the Academy nominated Encanto, Flee, Luca, The Mitchells vs the Machine and Raya and the Last Dragon.
