  • Jada Pinkett Smith, 50, showed fans her new bald spot in a video she posted to Instagram.

  • The actress has been open about her battle with alopecia over the past few years.

  • She said the condition was "terrifying when it first started."

Jada Pinkett Smith showed her Instagram followers a new bald spot in a video she created on Instagram this week.

“Now at this point, I can only laugh,” Jada, 50, said as she panned the camera over her shaved head to reveal a new spot. The actress has a bald line at the very top of her head, which she jokes may be more difficult for her to hide.

Alopecia is a condition that causes the body to attack its own hair follicles, causing hair to fall out, according to the American Academy of Dermatology. It can happen anywhere on the body, and most people who develop alopecia are otherwise healthy.

She captioned her Instagram video: “Mama's gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something?? Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!??."

The actress shaved her head in July, inspired by her daughter Willow Smith. "Willow made me do it because it was time to let go," she wrote on Instagram at the time. "BUT … my 50's are bout to be Divinely lit with this shed????"

Jada did not always have a sense of humor about the condition. In 2018, she opened up about her issues with hair loss on Red Table Talk, a Facebook Watch show hosted by Willow, Jada, and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris (better known to fans as the indomitable Gammy).

"It was terrifying when it first started. I was in the shower one day and had just handfuls of hair in my hands and I was just like, 'Oh my god, am I going bald?'” Jada shared.

She said she needed to take a spiritual perspective to help cope with the diagnosis. “The higher power takes so much from people. People are out here with cancer. People have sick children. I watch the higher power take things every day,” she said at the time, according to People.

Jada is far from alone in her diagnosis. According to statistics from Johns Hopkins Medicine, about 50 percent of Black women deal with hair loss in their lifetime. Alopecia is genetic, but can also be a symptom of stress or an unbalanced diet, according to dermatologist Crystal Aguh, MD.

Luckily, Jada has learned to embrace her alopecia. In the latest video, she points to the new bald line and says, “I’m going to put some rhinestones in there, make me a little crown.”

Musician Jahnavi Harrison commented on the post, saying “?????????? gorgeous as always… it’s your tiara spot!”

All hail Queen Jada!
