Jason Momoa Reveals He Was 'Too Broke to Fly Home' From a Trip During the Early Days of 'Game of Thrones'

It wasn’t always easy being the Khal.

Even though Jason Momoa is pretty much a household name today, things were very different for him before he started playing Khal Drogo on Game of Thrones.

According to CNBC, Momoa reflected on his time as a struggling actor during his first days shooting the hit HBO show, before he was a star acting in hit movies and shaving his beard to raise awareness for the world’s plastic problem.

On Instagram, Momoa wrote about his experience during a holiday weekend about a decade ago when he and his best friend, Brian Andrew Mendoza, were “too broke to fly home.” So they decided to rent a U-Haul van in Belfast, Ireland, and drove around the countryside, searching for the greatest pint of Guinness.

Perhaps they should have headed to the Guinness Beer Castle in the Wicklock Mountains? But they were in Ireland, so it was probably nearly impossible to find a bad pint.

At least, that’s what Momoa thinks. “Turns out it’s perfect everywhere,” he wrote on Instagram. “So many wonderful people and stories I treasure those times It was the simplest moments I remember the most.”

Momoa’s Irish road trip is a good example of using your ingenuity to take a vacation with your friends, even if you think can’t afford it. Turns out, there are ways to get away, even on the tiniest of budgets. Luckily, Momoa had a hit show to fall back on.

Much like other celebrities who suddenly hit it big, like Chrissy Metz, who told Glamour that she only had 81 cents in her bank account when she booked This is Us, Jason Momoa was just a struggling professional like many other people out there. It’s hard to think about celebrities being “too broke” to do anything when they’re playing larger-than-life kings and superheroes, though.

But, as Momoa told the Hollywood Reporter in 2017, “I haven't been an actor who's been able to pick and choose roles, and being a family man, it's been about putting food on the table.”

Not only is Momoa’s most recent Instagram post very sweet, but it’s also very humbling to think about.
