Jenna Bush Hager Reflects on How Her Body Changed After Ectopic Pregnancy
She opened up about the experience on a recent episode of 'Today.'
Jenna Bush Hager has opened up about her relationship with her body throughout her life, but especially following several pregnancies, including an ectopic one.
On Tuesday's episode of The Today Show, she met up with Amanda Bartolomeo, founder of fitness brand CorePlay, where Hager discussed her history with body image issues, starting from a very young age.
"When I first met Amanda, we started talking about finding your core, and what that means, metaphorically, for women and obviously, literally, making sure you're engaged," the co-host shared. Both women have suffered from ectopic pregnancies, a potentially fatal condition where the fertilized egg has implanted somewhere outside of the uterus, like in a fallopian tube or the abdominal cavity.
Bush Hager's ectopic pregnancy occurred before she had any of her other children—daughters Mila, 9, and Poppy, 7, as well as son Hal, 3—but still played an integral role in ignoring her core.
"I hadn't really engaged my core because I've had six or seven stomach surgeries with C-sections, appendicitis, ectopic pregnancy," she explained. "And so, I had sort of lost that part of me. But also as a woman, it was a really hard thing to go through."
"I think that's the thing about women's health, is that it's not just looking skinny or looking a certain way or fitting into your jeans," she said, adding that she's realized that "it's about feeling healthy all the way around."
Bartolomeo, who she met around the time of that ectopic pregnancy, emphasized the importance of "reaching out" and sharing the experience with those around you, and has helped Bush Hager "find her core" in a "happy and fun way with friends."
