The Official ‘Wednesday’ Trailer Reveals Two Major Characters, Including Christina Ricci’s Mystery Role
It’s time to break out the pigtail braids and black dresses, because Netflix is gifting the world a reboot we didn’t know we needed until now: an eight-episode TV series dedicated to the one, the only, the creepy, kooky, altogether ooky Wednesday Addams!
Truthfully though? We should’ve seen this one coming. After all, the character has been popular ever since her debut in the comics section of the New Yorker in 1938 (bet you didn’t know she was almost a century old!), and whether you met Wednesday on the 1964 TV show, in the popular 1990s films (thank you, Christina Ricci), or even in the 2010 Broadway show, chances are you’ve seen someone dress up as Wednesday for Halloween.
Unlike other Addams Family iterations, though, this is no straightforward telling. Miss Wednesday Addams is about to be live-action once again, and she’s also about to go on an ultimate coming-of-age journey to become the character we all know…and maybe sometimes love?
Here’s everything we know about what’s bound to become our new fave TV show.
First things first, what exactly is Wednesday about?
TBH, there aren’t many clues just yet. But Netflix did give fans minute details in its Twitter announcement back in February 2022.
The gist? Wednesday is not only going to be a student at Nevermore Academy (tell me that isn’t a creepy name for a school), but she’s also going to be a supernatural Nancy Drew of sorts!
According to Bloody Disgusting, the show will follow “Wednesday’s attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago—all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships.”
I mean, it is kinda intriguing, right? I’m game to see Wednesday solve mysteries à la Sherlock Holmes….
Awesome. Now tell me about the Wednesday cast.
Fans of You and the upcoming Scream film are going to be super excited, because the Hollywood Reporter announced in mid-May 2022 that a certain young actor is going to portray the titular role. That’s right—be prepared to see Jenna Ortega transform into the gothic tween!
While sharing the news on Insta, Jenna paid homage to the original series with a rather witty caption: “New chapter. Hope I can do Wednesday Addams justice. *snaps twice*” The 19-year-old actor happens to be good at being witty and sarcastic onscreen (#YesDay, anyone?) and also super well-versed at playing distraught characters, so she seems like a perfect fit for Wednesday Addams. Good choice, Netflix!
And you can already see her with the full iconic Wednesday look thanks to a special teaser that Netflix shared for Geeked Week.
And yes, she even has Wednesday’s scowl down in the first official photo of the character.
Meanwhile, Netflix dropped a bombshell on all of us by revealing that our OG Wednesday Addams, Christina Ricci, will be joining the cast in a mysterious new role. At New York Comic Con 2022, it was revealed that she would be playing Ms. Thornhill, a teacher at Nevermore Academy.
And, of course, there’s the rest of the iconic Addams family. In some of the best casting we’ve seen, Luis Guzmán and Catherine Zeta-Jones are playing Gomez and Morticia Addams, while newcomer Isaac Ordonez is making his debut as Pugsley Addams.
The cast also revealed at NYCC 2022 that Fred Armisen will be playing Uncle Fester.
So cool. But what’s the deal with rumors surrounding Tim Burton?
Talk of Burton’s involvement has gone waaay beyond the rumor stage. The man behind Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, and The Nightmare Before Christmas is not only involved, but he’ll actually be making his TV directing debut on the project too! If there’s any director who can do Wednesday Addams justice, it can only really be Tim Burton, you know?
That’s good to know! But do we have a premiere date?
Now that it’s officially fall and spooky season, Netflix decided it was the perfect time to announce the show’s official release date. So mark your calendars for November 23, because that’s when Wednesday will drop on the streamer. And yes, we even got a really cool poster to go along with the announcement.
And is there a trailer?!
Get ready to snap your fingers because there is plenty to celebrate. Netflix finally dropped a teaser trailer for Wednesday and it looks just as spooky and kooky as you’d imagine! Check it out below:
Netflix gave us a closer look during Tudum, and it looks like Wednesday is not happy to be at her new school. Not only that, but it looks like her parents sent her something a little…unexpected. If you had any doubts about Jenna as Wednesday, this clip will completely change your mind. You can find out below:
Fans at New York Comic Con 2022 got a special treat when they were the first to watch the official trailer and an exclusive clip that won’t be released to the public. But at least we can watch the trailer over and over in our PJs at home.
