Jennifer Lawrence loves reality TV so much she had a 'Kardashian tent' built to help her decompress

Jennifer Lawrence is such a big star, she’s gracing not one but four Vogue September issue covers. Jennifer Lawrence is such a regular person, she would never, ever call herself a “regular person.” All who have watched the actress’s career and accompanying publicity tours will recognize the paradox, but they’re no less charming in this cover story.

Perhaps her most approachable quality, which she opens up about to writer Jason Gay — in addition to her packed work schedule, her reputation, her work to end political corruption and the gender pay gap, her relationship with boyfriend and Mother! director Darren Aronofsky — is her love of reality TV.

Her passion for the genre runs so deep, in fact, that crew members on the set of her latest aforementioned thriller made her a “Kardashian tent” to help her decompress after intense scenes (one time she even hyperventilated, dislocated a rib, and had “oxygen tubes in my nostrils”). “It was a tent that had pictures of the Kardashians and Keeping Up with the Kardashians playing on a loop — and gumballs,” Lawrence said of the refuge. “My happy place.” (As she describes her passion for reality TV, “You can look at someone else’s life and say, ‘Well, obviously, you shouldn’t marry that guy,’ and it makes you feel like God for 30 minutes.”)

Aronofsky was not involved in creating the tent. “I was like, ‘What are you talking about, ‘the Kardashians?'” the 48-year-old told the magazine. He also does not share her love of trashy television.

Lawrence does occasionally switch channels away from the E! network. She caught Ariana Grande’s impression of her on Saturday Night Live, in which Jennifer Lawrence the character calls herself a “regular person” on celebrity Family Feud. “That’s what other people have said,” she clarified of that label. “If I’d said, ‘I’m a regular person,’ I’d want to kill myself.”

As further proof of her down-to-earth nature, however, she was refreshingly honest about her recent movie, Passengers, which critics hated. “I thought the script was beautiful — it was this tainted, complicated love story,” she said, admitting it could have been edited differently. “It definitely wasn’t a failure. I’m not embarrassed by it by any means. There was just stuff that I wished I’d looked into deeper before jumping on.”

The one thing that seems to upset Lawrence is the way her privacy has been invaded on at least two occasions, when her nude photos were hacked and when someone posted a video of her pole-dancing at a friend’s birthday party earlier this year.

“Having your privacy violated constantly isn’t a problem if you’re perfect. But if you’re human, it’s terrifying. When my publicist calls me, I’m like, ‘Oh, my God, what is it?’ Even when it’s nothing. I’m always waiting to get blindsided again.”

In addition to the interview, the magazine commissioned four covers in honor of Vogue‘s 125th anniversary, and they do seem to capture the different dimensions of the actress, particularly when accompanied with a hilarious behind-the-scenes video. She got on a tiny boat in the New York Harbor so Annie Liebowitz could snap her in a red Ralph Lauren Collection dress, looking like she owns the world, in front of the Statue of Liberty. Then, the portrait artist John Currin painted her looking like an ingénue from another century in a Miu Miu dress and fur hat. The team of Inez and Vinoodh photographed her with slicked back hair and slinky gold Versace dress, like she was stopping by before heading out to Studio 54. Finally, photographer Bruce Weber had her communing with the horses in upstate New York, a stand-in for her home state of Kentucky, in a white Dior button-down shirt.
