The film will be an adaptation of the 1993 musical featuring music from John Kander and Fred Ebb. Rehearsals are said to begin in February, with production commencing in New Jersey in April.

It will be directed by the Academy Award-winning Bill Condon, who scooped up the Oscar for Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published for his work on Gods and Monsters. He also scored another nomination for Adapted Screenplay in 2003 for his work on Chicago. Condon's last project was the live-action adaptation of Disney's Beauty and the Beast. He has also directed parts one and two of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn, as well as Dreamgirls.

Variety also shared that the casting team behind Kiss of the Spider Woman are searching for an unknown to play Molina.

Further information remains under wraps.
