'Jeopardy!' Star Buzzy Cohen Shares His True Thoughts About Mayim Bialik and Ken Jennings
Jeopardy! champion and former guest host Buzzy Cohen is joining fans in welcoming back Mayim Bialik to the lectern this week.
Tonight, season 38 of Jeopardy! enters its second week with Jeopardy! champion Matt Amodio leading the way with an impressive 23-game winning streak. After the quiz show’s first five episodes of the new season featured former executive producer Mike Richards, The Big Bang Theory alum is now taking over as an official weekly Jeopardy! host until the end of the year. It was recently announced that former Jeopardy! champion Ken Jennings will also return to the show to split weekly hosting duties with Mayim over the next few months.
This news comes as the show continues to search for a new permanent host following the death of Alex Trebek last November and a months-long audition process that included a roster of celebrity guest hosts. After Jeopardy! gave the gig to Mike, a string of controversies from his past emerged online and led to him stepping down and eventually leaving the quiz show altogether.
The hosting drama has caused a lot of instability at Jeopardy!, which is why it sounds like Buzzy agrees that ending the rotation of celebrity guest hosts for the time being is the right move.
“A little steadiness through the end of the year will be welcome,” he tweeted. “Go get 'em @missmayim and @KenJennings!”
After reading Buzzy’s response to the latest Jeopardy! news, folks couldn’t help but send him kind messages. Meanwhile, others made it clear that they're continuing to root for Buzzy to eventually become Jeopardy!’s new permanent host.
“Positive, supportive, and a team player. (Not to mention the fantastic job you did hosting.) You are just a class act, @buzztronics,” one person wrote. “What a good sport — I sure hope in the end that you are Jeopardy host!” another added. “That’s very gracious of you but I really hope you get the permanent gig!” a different fan said. “I love to see your support! While I think they are both fine you have my vote for the permanent gig,” a follower commented.
Back in mid-May, Buzzy made his debut as a Jeopardy! guest host for the annual Tournament of Champions. The special two-week event inevitably made him think back to when he beat out top Jeopardy! champions to win the 2017 ToC title and $250,000 grand prize. Speaking with the show after he guested hosted a total of 10 episodes, Buzzy tried to express how he felt helping honor Alex.
“I don’t have words for this. I stood on this stage four years ago and I told Alex, with all love and admiration, that I would love to host this show that I love so much. And I can’t believe I got this shot,” he recalled. “I’ve always said I love this game, I would play this game every day and I wasn’t sure how I would feel about hosting it. But I can say now I loved hosting this game … I really can’t put into words what this means to me.”
Whether or not Buzzy will grace the Jeopardy! stage again is unknown, but for now, Mayim and Ken will be bringing some routine back to the quiz show everyone enjoys.
