How did Jerry Springer become famous?

Born Gerald Norman Springer in a Highgate subway station in London during World War II to German-Jewish refugee parents, Springer spent his early years in the U.K. before his family emigrated to the United States in 1949 when he was four years old. He grew up in Queens, New York.

Springer graduated from Tulane University with a political science degree; during his undergraduate studies he hosted a college radio show on the university's station, giving him his first taste for broadcasting. He earned his law doctorate from Northwestern University in 1968. His first political job was as a campaign adviser to Robert F. Kennedy; after Kennedy's assassination, he began practicing law.

Springer ran an unsuccessful bid for the House of Representatives in 1970. He turned his attention to local politics and won a seat on the Cincinnati City Council a year later. Three years into his term, he resigned after admitting to soliciting a prostitute (a turn of events that wouldn't have been out of place in a storyline on his talk show decades later).

While such a scandal could potentially end political careers for most, Springer's candor regarding the incident actually earned him even more favor with his base, and he won his seat back in 1975 in a landslide victory. Two years later, he was elected Mayor of Cincinnati.

After an unsuccessful bid for governor of Ohio, Springer turned his attention to TV. He became a political commentator and later primary anchor for WLWT, Cincinnati's NBC affiliate, where he developed his trademark "Final Thoughts" catchphrase, "Take care of yourself and each other." He won 10 local Emmys for his nightly commentary.

The Jerry Springer Show debuted in 1991 to low ratings. He became a household name and a syndicated superstar three years later when he pivoted his show from informative and news-focused to tabloid, sensationalist and, yes—sometimes violent. The show lasted 27 seasons and aired its final new episode in July 2018.
