Jillian Michaels reveals the trick to making fitness a 'passion' —and not 'punishing'
Regardless of your opinion of Jillian Michaels — she is currently under fire for comments made regarding Lizzo’s body — she is widely regarded as a leading fitness and nutrition expert. After appearing as a trainer and former host on The Biggest Loser, Michaels has dominated the health and wellness arena with her successful fitness DVDs, exercise-streaming platforms, bestselling books, podcasts and most recently, the My Fitness App by Jillian Michaels.
Want to hit the gym more or eat healthier meals in 2020? Michaels dished on the best way to make sure that you don’t quit halfway through January.
“You gotta have that why,” Michaels tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “The why allows you to tolerate the how, the how being the work associated with the goal.”
Whatever your “why,” Michaels advised that it be personal and important to you — and that starts with not making any false promises and not being afraid of sacrifice.
“If it’s worth it to you — if you’re thinking, ‘I have this goal to wear a two-piece instead of a one-piece at spring break’ because you’re a college kid, that’s worth it to you,” she shares. “If you’re a 35-year old woman who lost a family member to breast cancer and you want to run a half marathon to raise money for that, that’s worth it to you. You want to walk your daughter down the aisle, you want to meet your great-grandchildren, you want to have sex with the lights on... you want to do it, if it matters to you, then that should motivate you to do the work.”
“Work that has purpose becomes a passion,” she adds. “But work without purpose just feels punishing.”
The other piece of the puzzle is action — but only if you have the right information.
“Educate yourself,” she insists. “So the steps you do take are going to yield positive results that help you really begin to believe in this reality that you can do it, that you are capable, that you are deserving.”
One of the trainer’s wellness must-haves? Organic and natural supplements — and the four she uses are from Alaya Naturals.
Alaya Naturals supplements are made from organically grown ingredients, plus every ingredient is on the label, so you can avoid surprises. The capsules are organic, non-GMO and vegan, plus, according to Michaels, the brand takes “things that work well together into one product, so I don’t have to take 50 things.”
Shop her favorites below:
Alaya Organic Super Greens Powder
This blend is made with 14 supergreens, nine antioxidants, seven adaptogens and probiotics — in all, over 30 different fruits, veggies, fungi, berries and herbs! The blend helps tackle the body’s health goals such as immunity support, anti-aging, digestive health, and energy.
“It has the antioxidants and the adaptogens and the supergreens ” Michaels shares.

Alaya Naturals Multi Collagen Protein Powder
This blend contains collagen types I, II, III, V, and X, and helps strengthen the gut lining while maintaining healthy bones, joints and, of course, our skin and nails. Collagen production slows after age 25, so be sure you’re adding this odorless, tasteless, and easily-dissolvable blend to your drinks and shakes. You can even bake it into desserts.
“You need a multi-collagen product,” Michaels advises. “The lining of your intestines is made up of one kind of collagen. Your hair, skin, and nails? Another kind of collagen. Your connective tissue? Another kind of collagen. That’s why you don’t just want ‘marine’ or ‘bovine’ or ‘eggshell’.”

Alaya Naturals Krill Oil
Krill oil can support your cardiovascular, eye, joint and brain health. Unlike other tablets, these leave a hint of vanilla on your palate — no fishy aftertaste here! It also doesn’t have the mercury levels of other fish supplements, Michaels shares.
Shop it: Alaya Naturals - Antarctic Krill Oil 500mg Supplement with Phospholipids, $20, amazon.com
Alaya Naturals Advanced Probiotic
Each serving of these probiotic capsules contains 4.4 billion CFU, which helps to reduce bloating, aids with digestion and increases energy.
“I notice a massive difference,” Michaels shares. “I just don’t get sick very often and I feel better, I look better and my skin looks better.”
