Jimmy John’s hops on breadless sandwich trend with the ‘Picklewich’
The pickle bun sandwich has officially hit the mainstream.
On Oct. 24, Jimmy John’s introduced its latest menu item — the Picklewich — which uses a kosher dill pickle in place of bread and packs on all of the usual JJ’s accoutrements.
The briny sandwich will be available at participating locations nationwide from Oct. 28 through Nov. 14.
Jimmy John’s is offering the Picklewich in two ways:
The Vito: This pickle-based remix of its original Vito sub features a gutted kosher dill pickle filled with salami, capocollo, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, sauce and herbs.
The Turkey and Provolone: This one takes a gutted kosher dill pickle and packs it with turkey, provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion.
In honor of its pair of pickle sammies, Jimmy John’s is also bringing back its Pickle Jimmy Chips to pair with them.
To celebrate a spooky season filled to the brim with brine, Jimmy John’s tapped noted pickle-lover Snooki Polizzi as the spokesperson for its Picklewich rollout.
The “Jersey Shore” icon is starring in a video as the punny “Pickle Witch” to celebrate the launch.
“I love pickles — they’re my thing,” Polizzi said in a press release. “And a pickle sandwich? Dream come true. It’s like Jimmy John’s made the new Picklewich just for me! The Vito Picklewich is my favorite. But if you’re a pickle lover, you need to try both!”
Pickle bun sandwiches have been a recurring viral phenomenon for years. Although it’s unclear who invented the sandwich riff, pickle sandwiches have attracted hoardes of customers to a trio of restaurants, all in the tristate area.
Back in 2019, Elsie’s, a now-closed sandwich shop in Haddon Township, New Jersey, went viral for its pickle sandwiches.
Then, in April of this year, Elsie’s Sub Shop (a different restaurant from the aforementioned Elsie’s) went viral when a TikToker posted about its pickle sandwiches. The Red Bank, New Jersey eatery has open since 1959 and its owner told TODAY.com that the shop had serving up these sandwiches for about a decade.
And in July, Long Island spot Seven Brothers Gourmet Food Market added a pickle sandwich to its menu, driving so much new business that its orders for buckets of pickles quadrupled.
Pickles: They’re good for business.
