Jodie Sweetin’s Childhood Was a Lot Harder Than Anyone Realized
Jodie Sweetin is best known for her role as Full House's Stephanie Tanner. But the 36-year-old actress has appeared in many more movies and TV shows since her time on the sitcom. Like her Full House cast mates, Candace Cameron Bure and Lori Loughlin, she's also joined the Hallmark family. Her movie, Entertaining Christmas, follows a cookbook author who's hiding a big secret. Here, a few things to know about Jodie ahead of her big premiere.
She’s reprising her most famous role on Netflix.
Though Full House ended in 1995, Jodie rejoined the cast as the famous middle child Stephanie when Netflix revived the series in 2016. The new show centers on eldest daughter DJ Tanner-Fuller (Candace), who is now the widowed mother of three sons. In a mirror of the original show, DJ enlists Stephanie, along with her best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber) to live with her and help raise her children.
She’s overcome a lot.
Jodie was adopted at just nine months old; her parents were both in prison at the time of her birth. Despite the early success she found on Full House, she has recently opened up about her struggles with alcoholism and addiction, which began in her early teenage years.
“I love coming out and sharing my story, because I’ve made it to the other side and it’s continual work, but getting to come to a place where I am happy with my life is amazing,” Jodie said during an appearance last year at her alma mater, Chapman University in California, per the school’s paper, The Panther.
After overcoming both alcoholism and an addiction to methamphetamine, Jodie has now been sober since 2011, and regularly visits colleges to speak to students about her experiences. She also wrote a book about her journey, which she released in 2010.
She's been married three times.
According to E! News, Jodie married her first husband, LAPD officer Shaun Holguin, in 2002 when she was just 20 years old. The couple divorced in 2006. E! also reports that the following year, Jodie began dating film industry driver and coordinator Cody Herpin, and the couple married in Las Vegas after two months of dating, in July of 2007. Jodie and Cody had a daughter together, Zoie Laurel May Herpin, but the couple separated just seven months after Zoie was born.
Jodie began dating Morty Coyle in 2009, and their daughter Beatrix was born in 2010, shortly before the couple’s engagement. People reports that Jodie and Morty married in March of 2012, but separated just over a year later; their divorce was finalized in 2016.
Most recently, Jodie became engaged to Justin Hodak in January of 2016, but broke off the engagement in March of 2017, after Hodak was arrested three times.
As of 2018, Jodie seems incredibly happy with her new boyfriend, Mescal Wasilewski. In a sweet Instagram post on Valentine’s Day of this year, she confirmed her new relationship, writing “Find someone who you can share this kind of love with... Someone who doesn’t just show you they love you one day a year. Who isn’t afraid to look silly when they tell you they love you. Who doesn’t judge you for past mistakes, but who wants to build a better future together.”
