Jodie Turner-Smith Files Police Report After Jewelry Theft in Cannes
Jodie Turner-Smith's experience in Cannes last week was straight out of a jewelry heist. The Anne Boleyn actress, who was at the film festival promoting her new project After Yang, reportedly had jewelry worth tens of thousands of euros stolen out of her hotel room on Friday. According to Variety, one of the items stolen was of particular sentimental value: Turner-Smith's mother's wedding ring.
Sources told the publication that "the actor, who was staying at the Marriott hotel on the Croisette, had been at breakfast on Friday when someone broke into her room and stole jewels worth several tens of thousands of euros."
On Sunday, Turner-Smith posted about the theft on Twitter. “didn’t think i would be spending 2.5 hours in the police station on my final day in cannes, but here we are…” she wrote. Variety confirmed with Turner-Smith's publicist that she reported the stolen goods to the police. Per TMZ, an investigation is currently underway.
Variety Reporters Ellise Shafer and Elsa Keslassy also note a potential motive for the theft. Turner Smith wore gold and diamond pieces from Gucci's High Jewelry line to a screening of After Yang on Thursday. As they explain, while the jewelry was returned following the premiere, "it’s believed the robbers may have broken into Turner-Smith’s room believing the items were still in her possession."
This isn't the first time a jewelry theft has taken place during the festival. In 2013, Chopard jewels worth reportedly more than $1 million, which were expected to be loaned out to stars walking the red carpet, were taken from a safe in a hotel.
