Joe Jonas Fires Back at Sophie Turner's 'Unfortunate' Lawsuit Claiming Child Abduction
Joe Jonas has responded to Sophie Turner's lawsuit, in which she claimed that he had unlawfully kept their two daughters in the US, going against their previously discussed plans of taking the children back to their UK home.
In a statement given by Jonas' representative to TMZ, Jonas denied any wrongdoing, while also noting that Turner was informed of the divorce, countering her claims that she found out about it through the media.
The representative wrote, "After multiple conversations with Sophie, Joe initiated divorce proceedings in Florida, as Florida is the appropriate jurisdiction for the case. Sophie was aware that Joe was going to file for divorce. The Florida Court has already entered an order that restricts both parents from relocating the children. Sophie was served with this order on September 6, 2023, more than two weeks ago."
It's also noted that Turner and Jonas had a "cordial meeting" in New York City on Sunday, Sept. 17. The Game of Thrones alum is said to have traveled there to be with the kids, who "have been with her since that meeting."
The representative alleges that the Jonas Brothers member's "impression of the meeting was that they had reached an understanding that they would work together towards an amicable co-parenting setup."
The statement explains that shortly after, Turner decided that she wanted to take the children permanently to the UK, and filed the lawsuit. However, the rep alleges that if Jonas complies, he "will be in violation of the Florida Court order."
As for what the musician wants, his representative shared that he "is seeking shared parenting with the kids so that they are raised by both their mother and father, and is of course also okay with the kids being raised both in the US and the UK."
Jonas was also troubled by the choice of words in the suit filing, noting through the statement that "when language like 'abduction' is used, it is misleading at best, and a serious abuse of the legal system at worst," as the children "are currently with their mother" and Turner "is making this claim only to move the divorce proceedings to the UK and to remove the children from the US permanently."
Turner filed the suit on Sept. 21, alleging that Jonas refused to hand her their children's passports after agreeing to allow the girls to return to their home in England with their mother.
