John Mulaney Shares the Most Important Thing He Learned in His Sobriety Journey
John Mulaney
John Mulaney made an important self-discovery during his stint in rehab.
On Oct. 12, the comedian was a guest on The Late Show, where he shared that this December will mark his three-year anniversary of being sober. Host Stephen Colbert asked his friend what he learned about himself during that period of recovery, and Mulaney gave a candid, heartfelt answer: "I am a happy person."
He explained, "I, for some reason, have set up various obstacles in my own way, that have left me sometimes pretty rough up, pretty disoriented and pretty unhappy. But I am at my core a happy person, and it's OK for me to protect that by living the life I want to live."
Mulaney then admitted that he's very lucky to have a "very good life" and doesn't want to be the reason why his own life "gets complicated."
The Big Mouth star also thanked Colbert for texting him to check in upon his announcement in 2020 that he was receiving help for his substance addiction. "I worried what you thought of me as if you wouldn't have compassion for someone in that situation, but your opinion means a lot to me and when you reached out, it was extra special in a way," confessed Mulaney.
The 41-year-old checked into rehab in December 2020 for cocaine and alcohol abuse. He detailed the extent of his addiction and the process of getting sober on his latest Netflix comedy, Baby J, which was released this past April.
