How you can join Benedict Allen on his next adventure
British explorer Benedict Allen will return to the Amazon rainforest next year to guide an exclusive tour for Telegraph Travel.
The adventurer, who was evacuated from Papua New Guinea last week after contracting malaria, is the only known person to have crossed the Amazon Basin at its widest point – a gruelling journey during which he was taught survival skills by local indigenous people. But next year's Telegraph Exclusive Tour promises to be a welcome contrast to his previous Amazon experiences – with a deluxe river boat, glamping in the rainforest, and freshly-cooked meals (no camp fire required).
On this 10-day holiday in Ecuador, the National Geographical Society trustee will guide guests into the rainforest on the luxurious small boat Anakonda, and share tales of his adventures – which also include traversing the Gobi Desert by horse and camel, exploring the Arctic with husky dogs, and living with the Himba tribes of Namibia – over three thrilling informal lectures.
There will be plenty of opportunities to quiz Allen about his far-flung explorations, including his recent Papua New Guinea expedition which he was forced to abandon after contracting malaria.
Operated by Steppes Travel, the itinerary will showcase the Amazon's remarkable natural splendour with guided rainforest walks, canoeing trips and even the chance to swim with pink river dolphins in the Unesco-listed Yasuni National Park. There will also be the rare chance to meet with indigenous tribal communities, and learn about their unique languages and customs.
If you're captivated by Allen's adventures but don't fancy launching a full-scale expedition down the Amazon, this itinerary promises the best of both worlds – with luxurious accommodation, expert guides, and an excellent raconteur host.
