JoJo Says Her Record Label Forced Her Into Losing Weight

For years, many celebrities have tried their best to fit into the stereotypical, supermodel body type; however, times are officially changing. The recent surge in the body-positive movement has caused a wave of celebrities to come forward and talk about the pressures to be thin within Hollywood, with the most recent being singer JoJo.
“Here’s something that I agreed to do that ended up messing with me psychologically,” JoJo said in an interview with Popsugar. “I was under a lot of pressure with a company I was at previously, and they wanted me to lose weight fast. So they got me with a nutritionist and had me, like, on all these supplements, and I was injecting myself — this is a common thing ‘the girls’ do all the way — it makes your body only need certain calories, so I ate 500 calories a day. It was the most unhealthy thing I’ve ever done.”
Although JoJo, 25, didn’t name the company she described being pressured by, she did say that she had felt the record company would withhold the release of her album if she did not lose the weight it wanted.
“I felt like, ‘If I don’t do this, my album won’t come out.’ Which it didn’t! So it’s not like it even worked!” JoJo explained, noting how the whole experience didn’t even pay off in helping her career in the end anyway.
As with most crash diets, JoJo gained all the weight back once she realized how unhealthy her lifestyle had become and has now learned how to avoid falling under the spell of the opinions of others.
Sadly, JoJo isn’t the only one to open up about having to make physical changes after being pressured from an employer. Actress Carrie Fisher claimed she was forced to lose more than 35 pounds to keep her role as Princess Leia in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, People magazine reports. That’s not all: Kesha’s mother claims that her daughter’s music producer, Dr. Luke, is responsible for her eating disorder after pressuring her to lose weight during her career as well.
While these are only a few examples of the professional pressures female celebrities are under to appear perfect, it’s undeniable that countless other women — celebrities or not — have felt similar burdens. Hopefully with more people speaking out in favor of the body-positive movement, women will be able to refrain from falling to the expectations of others.
