'Joker' Director Todd Philips Just Teased the Sequel's Full Title

Joker director Todd Phillips has revealed the title for the sequel, and it's going to be called Joker: Folie à deux.

Ever since Joaquin Phoenix first dabbed on the clown makeup three years ago, rumours of a follow-up have never gone away – thanks in part to its billion-dollar haul at the box office.

And today (June 8), Phillips let his Instagram followers know that he and Phoenix were recently in an office together going over the new script.

Its official title is the French for 'shared psychosis' and refers to a "delusion or mental illness shared by two people in close association", suggesting Arthur Fleck's fractured psyche will once again be explored on screen.

Phoenix won an Oscar for Best Actor for his performance in the original, which was both scintillating and devastating.

In October 2021, Phoenix was asked about revisiting the character, replying: "I mean, I dunno. From when we were shooting, we started to – you know, uhh, this is an interesting guy.

"There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further. But as to whether we actually will? I don't know."

Phoenix also commented when Joker first premiered (via The Playlist): "I talked to Todd a lot about what else we might be able to do, in general, just to work together, but also specifically, if there's something else we can do with Joker that might be interesting."

Now that it's seemingly written in stone, prepare for an avalanche of Folie à Deux theories.
