You might think the chances of the Worlds of DC's Joker getting a sequel would be increasing after its Oscars success, but that's not necessarily the case.

The Batman villain's origin story won two Academy Awards over the weekend, including a Best Actor Oscar for Joaquin Phoenix's powerhouse performance as Arthur Fleck.

Prior to the ceremony on the red carpet, Joker star Zazie Beetz actually had a surprising answer when asked if the awards buzz would help make a sequel a reality.

"Ah, I don't know," she admitted to MTV News, adding: "I don't know if it needs one. I think there is a lot of strength in not milking something."

Still, Beetz – who played Arthur's neighbor Sophie Dumond–said she would consider coming back for a hypothetical Joker 2 if director Todd Phillips was involved. "Honestly, I feel like Todd would be the person to be able to do that tastefully, I think, if he felt it needed one," she said. "I really trust him. He's really creative and smart – so sure."

And before anyone questions how Sophie could return in a Joker sequel, Todd Phillips has already cleared up whether she was actually killed off by Arthur. While Phillips has been non-committal about a sequel, he did recently express interest about a Batman movie set within the universe he created with Joker.

Joker is available to buy on Blu-ray or streaming now.
