Jordin Sparks's Other National Anthem Performance
Sunday wasn't when NFL players started taking a knee during the national anthem (a movement started by Colin Kaepernick last year to acknowledge police brutality and racial injustice), but it's when awareness of the #TakeAKnee movement took center stage during one of America's favorite past times.
But while singer Jordin Sparks didn't kneel after her performance of the national anthem during Monday night's Dallas Cowboys-Arizona Cardinals game, as two singers did on Sunday, she did slip in her own message in the form of a Bible verse written on her hand, shown prominently near the mic as she sang: "PROV 31:8-9."
The referenced verses, Proverbs 31:8-9, go as follows:
8 Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves,
for the rights of all who are destitute.
9 Speak up and judge fairly;
defend the rights of the poor and needy.
Sparks chose to take a subtle way to make a point; after Sunday, it remains to be seen who else will be moved to do so.
