Jose Andres And His World Central Kitchen Team Are In The Bahamas Feeding Hurricane Dorian Victims
José Andrés, a Spanish-American master chef with top-rated restaurants around the nation, is doing his best to help those affected by Hurricane Dorian. Andrés and his team from World Central Kitchen have set up shop in the Bahamas, specifically in Nassau, to do what they do best: feed people.
On Tuesday, the chef packed up nearly 2,000 ham and cheese sandwiches, flew out to the islands, and starting working in field kitchens. The team plans to deliver nearly 7,000 more sandwiches and fruit to go with it today, according to CNN.
Andrés aims to deliver as many meals as possible to those in Abaco and Grand Bahama islands, which were struck the hardest by the storm. He took to Twitter to share live footage of the hurricane’s destruction, even though he was 80 miles away from the eye of the storm.
“We need to crank as many meals as we can from this kitchen…we're trying to be saving as many lives as we can, one meal at a time,” Andrés told CBS This Morning.
UN officials report that given the widespread damage, upwards of 60,000 people in the Northern Abaco Islands will be in need of food. The World Central Kitchen is aiming supply nearly 30,000 meals per day to those in the affected areas.
Andrés is a veteran first responder. The humanitarian also helped out when Hurricane Maria struck Puerto Rico back in 2017.
“In disaster zones, you need empathy, and a will to just get it done," Andrés said.
