Political fashions hit the Grammys 2020 red carpet: ‘Impeach this’
Who needs C-SPAN when you have the Grammys red carpet?
Proving that politics is always in fashion, some Grammys attendees used their red carpet ensembles to make statements about President Donald Trump’s ongoing impeachment trial and U.S.-Iran relations.
Joy Villa, a singer-songwriter best known for her using her gowns to show support for her favorite conservative causes (MAGA, a border wall, anti-abortion rights), borrowed inspiration from the U.S. flag for her scene-stealing look. Carrying an evening bag emblazoned with a GOP elephant, Villa shrugged off her white, star-spangled cape to reveal a clingy red latex dress doubling as a pro-Trump billboard. “Trump 2020” ran down the front of the gown, while “Impeached & Re-elected” appeared on the back.
But Villa had competition in the attention-grabbing stakes from a fellow Trump-supporting recording artist. Singer-songwriter Ricky Rebel, an outspoken fan of both the president and LGBTQ rights, writhed along the red carpet in red chaps and a thong that exposed his bare butt cheeks. His buns were stamped with their own political message: “Impeach This.”
And on the other end of the political spectrum, actress, model and medical engineer Megan Pormer used her moment in the spotlight to call for peace with Iran. Pormer’s red sequined dress featured the message “No War [heart] Iran” along with a cape stitched from the U.S. and Iranian flags.
Will the show and speeches to come keep the partisan party going? Stay tuned.
