We Were There: All the Juice From Rihanna’s Space-Themed Cannes Party
When the dress code for a party is “Galactic with a touch of diamonds,” you can’t help but wonder what guest of honor Rihanna will come up with. The singer with a wicked fashion sense showed up to the space-themed gala by Cannes Film Fest official sponsor Chopard in a Disney princess-like dress by Adam Selman — but in true Rihanna style, with a sky-high slit to her waist that few princesses would dare to rock.
The light blue gown allowed the singer’s own multicolored jewelry — a collaboration with Chopard’s co-president Caroline Scheufele, inspired by the gardens and festivals of Rihanna’s native Barbados — to really shine. “We had this crazy fantastic adventure, working crazy hours to get it done,” Scheufele said of the new Rihanna Loves Chopard collection as she took the stage to thank her new friend and colleague.
By the time the guest of honor made her interstellar entrance, guests had already made themselves at home in the massive tent turned spaceship at Port Pierre Canto. Those lucky enough to score an invitation to the exclusive annual party flocked to small white tubes that looked like toothpaste but upon closer examination contained chocolate. Cake pops shaped like Saturn and chocolate mousse in tin jars made for mission-appropriate nourishment, while the champagne flowed and colorful galaxies swirled above.

While film-fest regulars like Isabelle Huppert and Julianne Moore were on hand for an earlier photo call, it was Bella Hadid in Roberto Cavalli who was the first celeb to arrive, strutting a galactic runway that led inside the party, with an entourage of about a half-dozen people in tow. Moments later, models Petra Nemkova and Adriana Lima joined the VIP area, right next to the stage, dancing to favorites like Jennifer Lopez’s “Jenny From the Block” and Michael Jackson’s “Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough.” Hadid briefly left the VIP area, only to escort friend Kendall Jenner on their fierce walk from the entrance back to their space deck.
Around midnight there was a flurry of flashes and activity as Cannes juror Will Smith arrived. Smith, who in the past few days has appeared to enjoy his stint to the fullest, continued to look content as he bobbed his head to the music, occasionally mouthing the words to songs like Mase’s “Feel So Good” and his own “Gettin’ Jiggy With It.”
But it was Rihanna’s arrival that really made the heads of guests spin. Arriving just before the special performance by Bruno Mars, those trying to catch a star on their smartphones didn’t know where to aim, as Mars ran through a set of his most famous hits – among them “Locked Out of Heaven” — while the 29-year-old singer and her friends in VIP swayed to the music. A stargazing delight, indeed.
