At last. Justin Bieber and Hailey Baldwin have finally decided to open up about their surprise wedding and the current state of their marriage in a new cover story published Thursday, February 7.

The couple, who married in a Manhattan courthouse last September, revealed many unknown details about their relationship to Vogue, including how they reunited and quickly got engaged a month later. Below, we round up five facts we’ve learned about the recently-married couple and their high-profile romance.

Their Relationship Was Founded First on Friendship

It was believed that the model was long a mega fan of Bieber (a Belieber of sorts). “I was never a superfan, of him or of anyone,” Baldwin told the mag. “It was never that crazed, screaming thing. I didn’t think about it in any kind of way except for the fact that he was cute. Everybody had a crush on him. But for the first few years we had a weird age gap.”

According to the piece, the couple became friends after she started attending Hillsong in New York City. “One day Justin walked into Hillsong and was like, ‘Hey, you got older.’ I was like, ‘Yeah, what’s up?’ Over time he became my best guy friend. I was running around with him as his homie, but we weren’t hanging out [romantically].”

They subsequently dated for a very brief period, but it ended poorly in 2015. “Negative things happened that we still need to talk about and work through,” Baldwin recalled. “Fizzled would not be the right word—it was more like a very dramatic excommunication. There was a period where if I walked into a room, he would walk out.”

Sex Was a Factor in the Couple’s Speedy Courthouse Wedding

In June 2018, the pair ended up reuniting at a Miami conference hosted by Pastor Rich Wilkerson Jr. “The common denominator, I promise you, is always church. By then we were past the drama. I just gave him a hug. By the end of the conference, he was like, ‘We’re not going to be friends,’” Baldwin recalled. “I was like, ‘We’re not?’”

Several weeks later, he proposed in the Bahamas. “When I saw her last June, I just forgot how much I loved her and how much I missed her and how much of a positive impact she made on my life,” Bieber explained. “I was like, Holy cow, this is what I’ve been looking for.”

The writer, Rob Haskell, also added a side note about the couple’s quick turnaround to marriage. “Justin admits that while a desire finally to have sex was one reason they sped to the courthouse, it was not the only reason,” he shared.

Baldwin Really Weighed the Decision Too

The model admitted that marriage was difficult from her end in the first few weeks—especially since she had taken serious steps to work through the decision. Meanwhile, social media wasn’t so kind and she felt public opposition against her relationship.

“I prayed to feel peace about the decision, and that’s where I landed,” Baldwin said. “I love him very much. I have loved him for a long time.”

They Admit: Marriage Is Challenging

“The thing is, marriage is very hard,” Baldwin explained. “That is the sentence you should lead with. It’s really effing hard.”

Healthy communication has been a significant hurdle for the pair, especially when it comes to the act of arguing well. A Lasting survey of 200,000 people found that less than half of respondents, in fact, believe they can talk about any issue comfortably together.

“Fighting is good. Doesn’t the Bible talk about righteous anger? We don’t want to lose each other,” Bieber opined. “We don’t want to say the wrong thing, and so we’ve been struggling with not expressing our emotions, which has been driving me absolutely crazy because I just need to express myself, and it’s been really difficult to get her to say what she feels.”

“You’ll get it out of me the next morning,” Baldwin added.

They Are Working Towards a Healthy Relationship

The model also opened up in detail about her approach. “It’s just that I’m fighting to do this the right way, to build a healthy relationship. I want people to know that. We’re coming from a really genuine place,” she continued. “But we’re two young people who are learning as we go. I’m not going to sit here and lie and say it’s all a magical fantasy. It’s always going to be hard. It’s a choice. You don’t feel it every single day. You don’t wake up every day saying, ‘I’m absolutely so in love and you are perfect.’ That’s not what being married is.”

She continued, “But there’s something beautiful about it anyway—about wanting to fight for something, commit to building with someone. We’re really young, and that’s a scary aspect. We’re going to change a lot. But we’re committed to growing together and supporting each other in those changes. That’s how I look at it. At the end of the day, too, he’s my best friend. I never get sick of him.”

“And you’re my baby boo,” Bieber added.
