Justin Verlander Opens Up About How His Wife Kate Upton Saved His Career
Justin Verlander scored a home run with his wife, Kate Upton. The Houston Astros player, who won the World Series last fall and subsequently hopped on a plane to his Tuscan wedding just days later, shared in a new interview how Upton helped him during one of his darkest times.
Four years ago, Verlander was facing a potential career setback and an injury that could’ve derailed his burgeoning position as a star MLB player. “I was depressed and kind of just upset at the world,” he recalled to Bleacher Report. “I really thought it was the end.”
It was then that Upton stepped in to help guide him. The supermodel knew the scrutiny of being in a similar position where bodies and physical features were critical to her career. “She obviously had dealt with more than me in her life,” Verlander recalled. “I mean, being a woman? Being in that industry? Being that famous? That was a level I hadn’t dealt with.”
The Other Woman actress was intent on having her boyfriend address his emotions and open up. “I don’t like to talk to people about being hurt,” he said. “As athletes, you’re not supposed to. It’s an excuse. … But she was someone I could talk to. I mean, basically a therapist.”
Two years later, Verlander recovered. The couple married in November, and they are now expecting their first child together.
“It was a very special moment. It was pretty storybook,” Verlander told People of his wedding this year. “The moment the gates opened and I saw her walking down the aisle, I lost it. She looked so beautiful, and I had been looking forward to that day for a long time. All the emotions came to me, and it was everything I had imagined it would be and more.”
