Kaitlyn Dever’s Oscars Gown Was 100 Percent Sustainable and 100 Percent Glam
For as glitzy and high-profile as Oscars night is, it’s hard for us to forget that it’s still 2020 and the temperature in Antartica was recorded at 65 degrees Fahrenheit this week. So our ears perked up when we heard Booksmart actress Kaitlyn Dever’s red carpet gown, which has already garnered comparisons to a modern-day Jessica Rabbit, was 100 percent sustainable.
In an interview with E!, the 23-year-old actor said that the red Louis Vuitton sheath was “completely sustainable,” as part of her support for Red Carpet Green Dress. The organization—headed by director James Cameron’s wife, Suzy Amis Cameron—campaigns to make sustainable design the norm on the red carpet and beyond.
According to a press release, Dever’s gown was embroidered with 14,400 Swarovski crystals over a period of 1,900 hours. She completed the look with diamond jewelry, a matching red shawl and heels by climate-neutral brand Aldo (which, FYI, retail for $47). Aside from her old-school glamorous gown, Dever also took the moment to encourage viewers to shop vintage and said it’s “really simple” to take a more sustainable approach to fashion.
It’s official: Planet-friendly is the new “it has pockets!”
